directed by Kevin Costner
USA 1990

Kevin Costner stars in and directs this triumphant masterpiece written by Michael Blake, based on his novel. This breathtaking 20th Anniversary Edition includes an extended cut of the film and all-new exclusive extras. Winner of seven Academy Awards®, including Best Directing and Best Picture, this modern classic tells the story of Lt. Dunbar (Costner), a Civil War hero who befriends a tribe of Sioux Indians while stationed at a desolate outpost on the American frontier. What follows is a series of unforgettable moments – from Dunbar’s tender scenes with Stands With A Fist (Mary McDonnell), to the thrilling, action-packed buffalo hunt.

***

His name, "Dances With Wolves," is the fulfillment of his character, the character he exposed in the opening scenes. He does what all medicine people do--he builds relationships between this world and other worlds--worlds of the spirit, of animals, of dreams, of strangers, and of new human values. As the film ends, he will try to bridge these worlds, and he begins the return journey to "talk with those who would listen." Screenwriter Michael Blake and Kevin Costner bridge two worlds themselves, and they do it without a word about shamanism or the psychology of mystical experience. I suspect, however, that they knew just what they were doing.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: MGM - Region A Blu-ray - January 2011: Upon investigating this 20th Anniversary Blu-ray package I must say that it's pretty impressive so far. I haven't identified any big problems - yes it looks very similar to the Kinowelt but skin tones/colors seem to be the biggest differences. The German Blu-ray has flesh-tones as warmer and the MGM a bit more orange. The tall grass and wheat are redder on the Region B and more golden on the US edition. But other than that they both look quite strong - kudos, of course, to Dean Semler's cinematography. Technically this MGM (that starts with a 20th Century Fox logo) has a larger file size for the feature and hence high bitrate for this the, almost 4-hour, 'Extended version' of the film. It's quite breathtaking. While not very textured it is thankfully, not too glossy either. This is most probably the zenith of how the impressive visuals can appear in this format.

Audio is more robust than the European counterpart with a similar DTS-HD Master 7.1 but at a whopping 4916 kbps. John Barry's score sounds awesome and the rifle shots have depth and crispness. This is tight clean and robust. Separations exist but I didn't find them primary - it was the powerful with subtleness and a resonance I don't usually note. Great to have this lossless track sound so good. There are optional English French or Spanish subtitles - including the English for the Sioux dialogue. My Momitsu has identified it as being a region 'A'-locked.

This 20th Anniversary package has 2 Blu-ray discs. With the feature are the 2 optional commentaries (Kevin Costner and Producer Jim Wilson and the 2nd with Cinematographer Dean Semler and editor Neil Travis ) plus two BD features - a new Military Rank and Social Hierarchy Guide that can optionally run with the film filling in details as you watch and a Real History of Movie Make-Believe Quiz with true or false questions on 19th Century America. The second Blu-ray has almost all the supplements from the previous editions including 1 1/4 hour documentary The Creation of an Epic - a 7-part retrospective that is quite interesting. One thing which is probably a glitch with my system but the SD 'vignettes' show as a small box in the corner of my system screen.

I have an odd relationship with this film - I frequently tend to give it far less credit than it deserves. Partly, because of Costner's less effectual ability to equal - or even come close since it's release. How unfair I am is easily self-identified by simply re-watching 'Dances With Wolves' - especially looking and sounding this strong. This is an incredible film - as I state: "...a watershed in the type of lengthy epic that is hardly attempted in the fast paced decades following its release in 1990". It's a beautiful experience - seemingly made for Blu-ray consumption. I was blown away by my viewing and would strongly consider this as a 'Desert Island Disc'. STRONGLY recommended package!

***

ADDITION: Kinowelt - Region B Blu-ray - December 09: A quasi-uproar occurred with Dances With Wolves fans when the, October 2009, UK Blu-ray edition HERE was only the 3 hour theatrical cut - not either the 224-minute extended version nor the almost 4-hour director's cut of the film. There were already European editions, including this one - this Kinowelt that contains the longest, most desirable version. Well - we have examined this Kinowelt edition - and the news is all good.

Firstly aside from the two optional commentaries and an HD trailer, the dual-layered Blu-ray disc is almost solely filled by the 3-hour, 56-minute film. So almost 46.5 Gig producing a modest bitrate. Regardless of the technicals - it's easy to see that the Blu-ray visuals blow away even the best DVD representation. Sharper, richer, tighter colors doing their darnedest to support Dean Semler's magnificent sweeping cinematography of the open west vistas. You get a far greater sense of the Panavision 70mm (blow-up) theatrical beauty via this 1080P transfer. We can forget the comparative cropping of the various DVD editions as the Blu-ray seems to show the most information in the frame. The Blu-ray doesn't offer abundant grain but the contrast is very strong and it is the upgraded detail that will 'wow' most purchasers. This is a stunningly beautiful film.

The DTS-HD Master 7.1 English Audio option at 2445 kbps is a big leap beyond the Starmax DTS track. The lossless rendering supports the film's majestic John Barry score akin to the Epic Records Super Audio CD format first offered many years ago and now fetching ridiculous out-of-print prices from 3rd party sellers. I would say that the Blu-ray has very good, if not penultimate, range and depth. Separation is moderate but the occasional subtleties are notable. I did note a few instances were the dialogue appeared a bit out-of-sync. If I get any support for this opinion I will post it here. The Kinowelt region 'B'-locked disc offers only optional German subtitles for the entire feature and English for the Sioux dialog.

Extras offer the previously available commentary tracks - one with Kevin Costner and Producer Jim Wilson and the second with DoP Dean Semler and editor Neil Travis. There is also an HD-Trailer and some previews.

Forgetting this as Kevin Costner's greatest achievement - Dances With Wolves certainly represents a watershed in the type of lengthy epic that is hardly attempted in the fast paced decades following its release in 1990. It's unique that a film would grow in stature but those nostalgic to those rarely seen epics of the past give this director's cut of the film a definite reason to obtain a region-free Blu-ray player IF they reside in region 'A'. For those lucky enough to be in region 'B' - it enters the realm of an essential hi-def purchase.

NOTE: It appears that Kinowelt may be offering another Blu-ray of the director's cut of the film with all the extras from the second DVD disc in February 2010. See HERE - Thanks Frank!
