Directed by Greg McLean
Australia 2017

Young Israeli Yossi Ghinsberg (Daniel Radcliffe, Swiss Army Man, Harry Potter) leaves a safe future behind to chase an improbable dream in the mysterious depths of the Amazon rainforest

For a year he journeys on the path well-travelled, but when he and two new fellow adventurers, Kevin Gale (Alex Russell, Unbroken) and Marcus Stamm (Joel Jackson, Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door ), meet the darkly charismatic Karl Ruchprecter (Thomas Kretschmann, Avengers: Age of Ultron ), and follow him into the jungle, what begins as the realisation of a dream soon turns into a harrowing psychological test of faith and fortitude.

Based on the true-life international best-selling memoir by Yossi Ghinsberg, this gut-churning tale of survival is worthy of placement next to the highly impressive likes of Into The Wild, Deliverance, Wild, 127 Hours, and Alive. In a career-best performance, Daniel Radcliffe is superb as Ghinsberg, a young man travelling the world in the early 1980s, against the better wishes of his strict parents.

A survival film that marches to the delirious beat of its own hallucinogenic drum, Jungle bows inventively before the bad guy to end all bad guys: Mother Nature.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The Umbrella Blu-ray is Region FREE. Jungle has been released on Blu-ray by various companies around the world.  Umbrella's Blu-ray transfer is on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. It looks wonderful in 1080P - with plenty of impressive nature photography. Jungle is in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio and there are strong colors, and tight lines notable in the film's close-ups. There is a fantasy sequences in a different visuals style and the presentation is very strong in-motion. Overall; impressive.

The Umbrella Blu-ray has a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround audio track (24-bit) in the original English. There are a few aggressive effects - and some jumpy separations from the natural world that are exported with alacrity if not floor-rattling depth. Impacting on the presentation is the score by Johnny Klimek (Run Lola Run) adding mystery, atmosphere and tension. There are optional English subtitles (see sample) offered on Umbrella's Region FREE Blu-ray disc.

Umbrella include many electronic press kit pieces as extras - a 10-minute featurette Becoming Yossi with input from director Greg MacLean etc., another closer to a 1/4 hour on The Making of the Yossi Ghinsberg Story and a whopping 2+ hours of cast and crew Interviews including actors Daniel Radcliffe, Thomas Kretschmann, Alex Russell, Joel Jackson and others. There is also a theatrical trailer.

Not a bad survival adventure at all - convincing performances, beautiful visuals - kudos to Stefan Duscio's cinematography. And it's based on a true story from his novel Jungle: A Harrowing True Story of Survival! Ghinsberg's story was also featured in the documentary series I Shouldn't Be Alive on Discovery Channel. Frequently dubbed 'Harry Potter vs. Nature', but Radcliffe is excellent although if the film has an obvious complaint it may be overly dramatizing some of the situations, The Umbrella Blu-ray offers a lot for fans who want to see the film and indulge in the multitude of supplemental material. Recommended!
