created by Victor Fleming
USA 1948
Director Victor Fleming's final film features Ingrid Bergman as a vivid and luminous Joan of Arc, the 15th-century French peasant girl who led the French in battle against the invading English, becoming a national hero. When she was captured, tortured, and ultimately executed by the English, she was made a Catholic saint. Bergman's Joan is a strong and spiritual figure who proves her devotion to the Dauphin (Jose Ferrer), later to become the King of France. Joan is compelling as she wins an alliance with the Governor of Vaucouleurs and the courtiers at Chinon, leads her army in the Battle of Orleans, is betrayed by the Burgundians, and edicts that "our strength is in our faith." *** Brand New 2K Restoration! This classic epic was directed by the brilliant Victor Fleming (Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz) and starred the radiant Ingrid Bergman (Casablanca) in one of her most stunning performances. Bergman is spellbinding as the 15th century French peasant girl who rouses a nation and inspires the world with her faith and bravery. Fiercely believing that she s directed by God, Joan triumphantly leads an army into battle against the British, who are driven from France. Yet as Joan's influence grows, the king (José Ferrer, Moulin Rouge) becomes increasingly wary of her power and ultimately betrays her to her death and martyrdom. A lavish award-winning epic film, Joan of Arc is a powerful story of one of history's most fascinating heroines. The stellar cast also includes Ward Bond (The Searchers), J. Carrol Naish (Clash by Night) and Gene Lockhart (Miracle on 34th Street). |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. Joan of Arc gets a 1080P transfer to Blu-ray from Kino. Not only does this 3 Strip Technicolor film look amazing at times - the density of the source must have been quite strong as the contrast is impressive as well. This, almost 2 1/2 hour, film is on a dual-layered disc with a very high bitrate. There are some weaker moments where it can look frail, too dark, a very few speckles and colors that may bleed but barring a full restoration this is a wonderful HD presentation.
Audio comes in a healthy DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) that exports the film's battle sequences, horses, etc. well enough if flat but there is some depth. The score is composed by Hugo Friedhofer (Broken Arrow, Between Heaven and Hell, Man in the Attic, Ace in the Hole, Body and Soul, Gilda, The Bishop's Wife) and it adds to the film's adventurous and noble feel. Kino offer no subtitles and their Blu-ray disc is region 'A'-locked.
No extras except 6 trailers for similar era films.
I loved this as a companion piece to show before The Passion of Joan of Arc. I would recommend this Blu-ray to vintage era film lovers - fans of Bergman or the lore of Joan of Arc. I thought this was a riveting historical drama. - Gary Tooze |
