Helen Brent knows Sam Wild is more than a social climber who married her wealthy foster sister. He's a remorseless killer. And yet she finds his brash confidence, square-shouldered good looks and constant aura of menace completely irresistible. Versatile director Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Sound of Music, West Side Story) shows his film-noir chops with this dark gem whose mix of heiress sisters, stone-hearted men, needy hangers-on and inexplicable but inevitable love plays like a soap opera that refuses to wash itself clean. Walter Slezak portrays the verse-quoting shamus. And Claire Trevor and Lawrence Tierney portray the illicit lovers who play with fire and burn their names forever into film-noir lore. |

NOTE: This DVD is coded for regions 1 and 4 while the rest of the Boxset is 1 - 4 inclusive. The transfer is very good - this print may have been quite dirty and shows some fine grain. I also noticed what appears to be edge enhancement, but I zoomed in extensively without coming to any definite conclusions - the print may just have a very prominent contrast with very deep blacks. Typical for the set, the audio is original mono and English, French and Spanish subtitles are offered. The commentary was a treat with Mueller who has a fountain of noir information to share. Another worthy DVD purchase with the type of quality we now expect from Warner! out of |

The DVD of Clash By Night is compared to the Blu-ray HERE
Mae Doyle is a good-time girl, but now times are bad. Weary of too much booze and too many men, she returns to her girlhood home, the fishing village of Monterey, California. There she finds security as the wife of a devoted and dull fisherman and passion in the arms of his provocative best friend. Film noir master Fritz Lang (The Big Heat, Ministry of Fear) directs four towering talents - Barbara Stanwyck, Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan and rising star Marilyn Monroe - in a stark tale of lives burnished by human emotion and shattered by human failings. Intense and powerfully realistic, Clash by Night (from a Clifford Odets play) is about many towns, many families. Serene on the surface. Roiling with desperation underneath. |

The DVD of Clash By Night is compared to the Blu-ray HERE There is some damage in beginning - mostly in the form of long scratches but they soon settle in for a typical strong Warner image. This transfer is very sharp with some heavy grain at times but conclusively a very acceptable image. The Bogdanovich commentary is smooth and up to his usual standard of competent film knowledge - the audio excerpts from Lang are interspersed in the commentary and Bogdanovich does his best to highlight them with his own comments. I found them quite hard to hear and interpret though (had to pump volume). Also included as an extra is the theatrical trailer. Good job by Warner! out of |

The DVD of Crossfire is compared to the Blu-ray HERE
Years of police work have taught Detective Finlay that where there's crime, there's motive. But he finds no usual motive when investigating the beating death of a man. The man was killed because he was a Jew. "Hate," Finlay says, "is like a gun." Robert Young portrays Finlay, Robert Mitchum is a laconic army sergeant assisting in the investigation of G.I. suspects and Robert Ryan plays a vicious bigot in a landmark Film noir nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture. Edward Dmytryk (Murder, My Sweet) directs, draping the genre's stylistic backdrops and flourishes around a topic rarely before explored in films: anti-Semitism in the U.S. Here, Hollywood took aim at injustice and caught bigotry in a Crossfire. |

The DVD of Crossfire is compared to the Blu-ray HERE The image on "Crossfire" looks a little heavy and thick. Probably the least sharp DVD in the Boxset, it still gave me my Gloria Grahame fix :). Dark at times the only real failing is the, slightly below standard, haziness. It reminded me of a PAL version I have of the film. Another commentary is included (not got to it yet) and a 9 minute featurette Crossfire: Hate Is Like a Gun. out of Gary W. Tooze |

Willie Sutton robbed banks during the Depression because, he explained, "That's where the money is." Former Indiana farmboy John Dillinger also knew where the money was. And his string of early-1930s heists, murders and daring jailbreaks were so bold and notorious he became Public Enemy #1. Dillinger, Oscar-nominated* for its screenplay, is the bullet-paced story of the man whose crimes captivated and terrified the nation. Lawrence Tierney plays the title role, breaking free of screen anonymity and moving into a 50-year tough-guy career that would include 1947's Born to Kill and 1992's Reservoir Dogs. Perhaps it was a brutal early prison stretch that turned Dillinger from kid to killer. Perhaps he was a murderous thug to his core. Either way, Dillinger presents his story with Film noir style and lets you decide. |

A very short film, clocking in at less than 70 minutes, but looks very good despite its age (the oldest film in the Boxset). The print must have been in great shape. Perhaps more suitable for the "Gangster Boxset" than the Film Noir. Very sharp with exceptional gray-tones. Lots of grain in close-ups and some very minor scratch/dirt damage. Original audio and solid subtitles. There is a commentary by John Milius (director of the 73' version) with a few audio excerpts from screenwriter Philip Yordan. out of |

Pack your bags for one of movie history's greatest trips, a nifty Film noir thriller that Time deemed "worthy of being bracketed in the select group of train thrillers headed by Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes." The tracks run direct from Chicago to L.A. The Oscar-nominated story, directed by Richard Fleischer (The Boston Strangler) and scripted by his frequent collaborator Earl Felton, zigzags with surprise turns. Film noir favorite Charles McGraw plays a cop guarding a gangster's moll (fellow genre icon Marie Windsor) as she travels west to testify before a grand jury. Also riding the Pullmans: determined hitmen who know the moll is on the train but don't know what she looks like. All aboard!. |

We have compared one frame with the French Montparnasse PAL edition, which looks quite inferior next to the clean Warner who again show us why the only real DVD Production studio competing with them is Criterion. Perhaps a shade softer that we have become accustomed to, with some very minor scratch damage, this still looks quite strong for a 50 year old film. I watched quite a few Richard Fleischer films recently (Soylent Green, The Boston Strangler, The Jazz Singer etc.) and with The Narrow Margin, I conclude that he is a bit of a forgotten director in the Hollywood lore. out of |
