Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Film Movement - Region FREE - Blu-ray October 16': Firstly, it's easy to write off Sarno as a smut-peddler ('the Ingmar Bergman of 42nd St.,') but the frankness of the filmmakers in the extras (Sarno and Chris Nebe in the commentary) are refreshing in they basically admit that is what they were going for. Kind of pioneering quasi-porno sexploitation. However, there is something to this - it is genuinely erotic (kudos to super Swedish-hottie Marie Forså - possessed by a nymphomaniac - who can't keep her hands out of her panties in Vampire Ecstasy - she really gets into her role) and the story does have a semblance of cohesiveness and merits discussion or at least some critical scrutiny rather than dismissive-ness. It's a poor production on many fronts but I think it has some value - even if only as soft-ish pornography thinly veiled as horror or as a historical artefact for this sub-genre. I'm not trying to rationalize this as anything much more than it is - but I enjoyed it despite the egregious production imperfections.

Film Movement's 1080P transfer is significantly improved over the SDs as the comparison captures will indicate. The issue I think some will have with this presentation is the poor DUBs and lossy audio - plus no subtitles. I guess a file like this isn't worth the effort. Some of the colors are richer and it doesn't seem to have the damage of the SDs. It looks okay - and has a high bitrate. Weaknesses are a result of the source - no digitization that I can see.

Extras include a couple of interviews - one with Joseph W. Sarno from May 2005 entitled A Touch of Horror, where he describes adapting his style to the horror genre, and a second from 2004 interspersed with input from Producer, Christian Nebe. Nebe gives a commentary and both he and the moderator are very open - lots of 'they were f$cking'-type dialogue and he offers some keen anecdotes about the production, budgeting, and I found it amazing how he seemed to know all the certification restrictions of every European country the film played in. There are German and English-language trailers and we also get Sin You Sinners (compared to DVD HERE) and the package includes liner notes by film scholar Tim Lucas (Hooray!)

To each his own... not your typical Euro-trashy throw-away horror. Film Movement has done a decent job bringing value to their Blu-ray package.

 -Gary Tooze and Eric Cotenas
