(aka "Einer gibt nicht auf")

directed by Budd Boetticher
USA 19
60

The last of the marvellous Westerns partnering Boetticher and Scott, beautifully scripted by Burt Kennedy and performed by a solid cast. Scott's the obsessive man, hunting these last ten years for a wife kidnapped by Comanches, who rescues instead another woman, only to find himself up against Akins and his reward-hungry sidekicks as he ferries her back to civilisation. With characters doomed from the start, it's a bleakly pessimistic film that gains warmth from gently ironic humour and a discreetly elegiac tone.

Excerpt from TimeOut located HERE

The conclusion of Budd Boetticher's Randolph Scott western cycle (1960), and a worthy culmination, combining summary elements (it's the last word on Boetticher's revenge plot) and hints of further developments (in the ultimate purification and loneliness of Scott's revenge-seeking hero). The film is essentially a series of horseback and campfire conversations, in which the morally ambiguous characters size each other up and try to decide what best to do with the white woman (Nancy Gates) Scott has inadvertently rescued from the Indians.

ADDITION: Indicator - Region FREE - Blu-ray - May 2018: The Indicator is part of the Five Tall Tales: Budd Boetticher & Randolph Scott At Columbia, 1957-1960, Region FREE, Blu-ray set reviewed HERE.

In short, the video is about the same - maybe a notch higher than the German 1080P. Audio in the UK package is superior (still linear PCM mono but 24-bit as opposed to 16-bit) but the big advancement is in the extras - commentaries, interviews, documentaries and much more...

ADDITION: Explosive-Media - Region FREE - Blu-ray - September 2016: The Sony DVD is from their The Films of Budd Boetticher - The Collector's Choice reviewed HERE. You can see how the 1080P resolution improves the video presentation. It is a single-layered Blu-ray - but the film is short and the bitrate is high. It is sharper, colors are brighter and there is frequent depth - no present on the heavier, low bitrate, SD appearance. We all appreciated the Sony boxset when it was released but this is a significant step forward.

Audio goes lossless - linear PCM (16-bit) in both original English and a German DUB - and sounds quite good if not overly dynamic. The score by versatile and prolific Mischa Bakaleinikoff (It Came from Beneath the Sea, The Crooked Web, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, The 27th Day, 20 Million Miles to Earth, Lady for a Day) sounds subtle and supportive. There are optional English and German subtitle options and the Blu-ray disc is region FREE.

We get a 1/2 hour public interview with Budd Boetticher entitled Budd Boetticher Hollywood Stories and it has some revealing moments regarding the enigmatic director. There is also an HD trailer and a gallery slideshow. Unfortunately the commentary on the DVD is not included.

I am pleased with this presentation and loved seeing the film again - absolute class production and a masterwork of the genre. I give this Blu-ray a recommendation!
