(aka "I Saw What You Did and I Know Who You Are!")

directed by William Castle
USA 1965

It starts as a game…and there’s no end in FRIGHT!

A simple prank call turns into a night of person-to-person terror in I Saw What You Did, a movie that dials up the suspense.

Teenagers Libby and Kit have found a new way to entertain themselves: by calling up random strangers and tormenting them with a warning: "I saw what you did, and I know who you are. ", But when a man who has recently murdered his wife becomes their latest victim, the tables are quickly turned…and this wrong number may mean that their number is up.

Joan Crawford (What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?, Trog) and John Ireland are among the stars in this chiller produced and directed by the legendary Master of the Macabre, William Castle (House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler, Strait-Jacket).

***

With true William Castle-style flamboyance the advertisements for I Saw What You Did intrigued non-etymologically inclined audiences by warning them that this suspenseful thriller was about uxoricide. He then had some of the theaters where the film was shown equipped with seat belts so frightened audience members wouldn't flee the theater in a panic. It was a spooky film, but wasn't all that scary. The tale begins upon a dark and foggy night as two teenage girls, bored with their baby-sitting job, decide to have a little fun and make some prank phonecalls. Every time some hapless person answers, they whisper conspiratorially "I saw what you did. I know who you are." Unfortunately, they happen to call a man who has just murdered his wife --- in the shower no less! He takes the call seriously and so sets off into the night to find the girls and silence them forever.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Shout! Factory have transferred another Joan Crawford / William Castle 'Grande Dame Guignol' or 'Hagsploitation' entry, I Saw What You Did, to Blu-ray, although Crawford is the star in marquee only have less on-screen time than her fans might like. The 1080P is an advancement over SD but not demonstratively crisp with some inherent softness in the visuals. It underwhelms - looking okay in-motion but a notch below the format's lofty standard. It shows some speckles and cue-blips (see below.) This is probably the best the film will look on digital for a long while.

Shout! Factory use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel (24-bit) in the original English language. There are a few aggressive shower-related effects but mostly impacting with the score is by composer, bandleader, and conductor Van Alexander (The Big Operator, Castle production's I Straight-Jacket13 Frightened Girls) adding a creepy edge to the narrative. The audio is an appealing attribute to this presentation and there are optional English subtitles on the Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray.

Extras consist only of a trailer - cited as a "Special World Premiere Announcement” trailer featuring William Castle" and stills gallery. No commentary or interviews as found on the Shout! Factory Straight-Jacket Blu-ray.

One of the less-polished Castle films devoid of the usual twisty ending and extensive marketing gimmickry. Solid premise but seems to stall in the final third. Still, fans of this unique genre and Crawford devotees will appreciate the HD presentation and lossless audio. Recommended to a select few.
