(aka 'Le Fleuve sauvage')

Directed by Elia Kazan
USA 1960

With a touch of humanism and social conviction Wild River focuses on a TVA dam project that will evict a family (matriarch Van Fleet) and her significant number of black employees. Lee Remick, as well as being jaw-dropping stunning as a country lass, is a widowed daughter of said family and graces the screen with another of her magnificent performances. Montgomery Clift's character, Chuck Glover, has the unenviable job as the ministry employee who must shoo the tenants to vacate. Monty and Remick establish a relationship which helps convert Cliff to the side of the righteous. Kazan's build seems slower than the erratic pace of the plot but it is still superior Hollywood fare shot in magnificent cinemascope.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Masters of Cinema - Region 'B' Blu-ray - February 2015: Wow! The Masters of Cinema provide an impressive upgrade from the Fox 1080P. Toggling between the larger captures you will see the UK, dual-layered, rendering shows a sharper image as well as some appreciated grain textures - absent from the Fox. The teal-leaning may still exist but this is still a massive upgrade in quality (dual-layered with a max'ed out bitrate), as far as I am concerned. I *think* all the captures below are the exact frame matches.

Masters of Cinema go for a linear PCM mono track with a score by Kenyon Hopkins (12 Angry Men, The Hustler, Downhill Racer). It sounds, predictably flat, but clean and clear with a touch of pleasing depth. There are optional English subtitles on the region 'B'-locked Blu-ray disc.

MoC add their own supplements. We get a new commentary by Glenn Kenny and Farran Smith Nehme - reunited from their commentary on MoC's The Gang's All Here - and are on-form delivering some interesting tidbits about the production and performers. It's a nice alternative to Schickel's on the Fox. There is also a trailer and stills gallery and the dual-format package has a 40-page liner notes booklet with a
new essay by Adrian Martin, and plenty of photos. There is also a DVD included.

This is the definitive edition - get the Masters of Cinema - wonderful Blu-ray package. We give it our highest recommendation!

ADDITION: 20th Century Fox - Region 'A' Blu-ray - January 2013: We assume this is part of the Elia Kazan Collection - offered by Fox in the new format. This new Blu-ray release has the Teal color timing alternation that is becoming troublesome to some Home Cinema fans. It is quite noticeable and seems most prevalent in the eyes (Remick), Monty's suit changes from grey to green and the blue jeans of characters. It is a phenomenon we will continue to investigate and report on. I also notice a softness that I don't believe is inherent in the original print and a lack of grain textures. The DVD has a bit of the Cinemascope 'mumps' stretching the image horizontally. This isn't the case on the 2.35:1 1080P transfer. Other than the colors the HD visuals look a bit tighter showing marginal depth. The DVD is in PAL running time.

The audio is a DTS-HD Master stereo 2.0 channel at a reasonable 1768 kbps. It supports Kenyon Hopkins' subtle score and dialogue is clean and clear. The disc is coded region 'A' and has optional subtitles.

Extras have a Richard Schickel commentary I look forward to listening to this evening. There is also a trailer in SD.

Despite the teal and lack-of-grain faux-pas - that we hope is not an issue with the other Kazan classics to Blu - Wild River is a wonderful film to own. Those who have not seen it are encouraged to do so. Monty never looked as comfortable after his car accident but Lee Remick is the gem of the film in my opinion.

ON THE DVD: NOTE (repeated from Bigger Than Life Review): Going by the initial menus one might expect this to be like many of un-transferred (in NTSC) great English language films by French production companies that have player generated forced subtitles on the original English audio track. BUT the news is very good - the French subtitles are removable (not mandatory).

Another strong anamorphic and progressive image on this Carlotta DVD. The colors are true and there is exceptional detail. The image is tight to the frame maximizing horizontal resolution, the extras are unfortunately all in French (only) but the dialogue audio (mono) was clear and very consistent in the main feature. Overall this is a fabulous release that may have deserved a vote or two in our Year End Poll. We feel this film and transfer are equal to Carlotta's Bigger Than Life Review -  awarded DVD of the Month for January 06'.
