Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers (1968)      Pandora Peaks (1973)

(aka "Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers!" or "Null Null Sex")

directed by Russ Meyer
USA 1968

To be successful as soft-core pornography, movies like Meyer's require a certain innocence on the part of the audience. "Finders Keepers," which has to do with the comeuppance of the owner of a go-go club who suffers from a mild form of satyriasis, appears in the context of numerous other films that are much more explicit in terms of nudity and language.

Meyer's sole preoccupation with extraordinarily well-developed female breasts, usually photographed from a low angle and while they're in some sort of motion, is no longer particular erotic. Nor do grunting love scenes, photographed from the waist up, suggest much more than difficult physical labor.

The virtues of "Finders Keepers" are a lack of moral pretension (his characters have only one thing on their minds) and a sort of low humor that, during one scene, has the camera cutting away from the lovers to show a series of collisions between out-of-control stock cars.

Comments

Here we find the strange cinematic pairing of "Pandora Peaks" and "Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers". I suppose that with the need to combine some of his lesser known films in the boxset as a space saving measure there would be some strange pairings, but it almost seems as though Arrow found a couple of good fits and left the rest to chance. On this disc they've seen fit to begin with Meyer's final film, a tribute to the queens of big enormous breast from the last century, with an emphasis on adult model Pandora Peaks. The film is almost entirely composed of Ms. Peaks either nude or getting nude with both her and Meyer providing some fairly entertaining commentary over the footage. "Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers" is a very different film than the aforementioned documentary. Instead, this film tells the story of a nightclub owner and some truly odd characters that surround him. It's another of Meyer's moralistic dramas with a healthy smattering of sex, nudity, and violence. For its madcap enthusiasm and zaniness, I can easily recommend "Pandora Peaks" (Meyer's narration can be very entertaining!) and I suppose that there is enough in the somewhat forgettable second entry on the disc to recommend giving it at least one viewing.

Unfortunately the image on this disc, and indeed all of the films included in Arrow's Russ Meyer Collection, can only be described as a disappointment. The image is incredibly soft and carries low levels of contrast and clarity. The image also contains very distracting ghosting that occurs during almost any movement, no matter how fast it is. Finally, the image is also interlaced. Even when my computer ran interlacing correcting programs, the combing was readily apparent. When they were turned off, horizontal movements looked like they do in the seventh capture on both films.

The sound on this release was just fine, with the Dolby Digital 2.0 sounding clear and about as good as the tracks come. Unfortunately there are no subtitles on the release.

The only extras included are a trailer reel and a series of TV spots that are found on a number of the releases in this collection.

While the release is far from ideal, I'll give the disc a slight recommendation. What you see is what you get with the poor image, but the films are entertaining enough. Hopefully there'll be a better release of these films in the future.

(aka "Russ Meyer's Pandora Peaks " )

directed by Russ Meyer
USA 2001

There's actually not much to tell about this movie and definitely nothing to spoil. There was no plot, just sequences after sequences where Pandora Peaks gets undressed and dressed again while some music is playing in the background. But, if you wanna see Pandora Peaks naked (you can see every inch of her body in this one) or you're just a die-hard-fan of Russ Meyer stuff (although this one is very different than his real movies), this is the one for you. Otherwise, avoid this one.
