(aka "Pussycat" or "The Leather Girls" or "The Mankillers")

directed by Russ Meyer
USA 1965

"Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! is beyond a doubt, the best movie ever made. It is possibly better than any film that will be made in the future" - John Waters (HERE)

A cornerstone of both camp and punk cultures — no mean feat — Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! (1966) shows the thrillingly lethal consequences when aggravated go-go dancers get bored. Russ Meyer's black-and-white desert Gothic melodrama — for some viewers the crown jewel in a flashy career — opens with crazed half-naked women dancing in shadow and thrusting their tits into the camera, while a pompous male voice in overdub details the horrors of the "predatory female" for its nervous target audience — the sexually paranoid hetero male sitting alone in Pussycat theatres across the country. This film slightly predates the phenomenon of couples going out to porno films that began more or less with Deep Throat. Here Meyer is still unabashedly exploiting his own fantasies of a world of dominant, sexually supercharged women who ruthlessly take out their anxieties on any man who crosses their path — or is lured into their "web."

Meyer's subtle detailing of these relationships makes Faster Pussycat look like a William Inge play, with a warped quasi-family slowly destroying each other. Of course, the director doesn't neglect the cheesecake; he includes consciously gratuitous shots of the girls showering, strapping on their bras, and so on. Yet there is surprisingly little real (well, simulated real) sex in this one; Meyer exploits the goings-on more for their dramatic and violent possibilities. Eventually all the secret tragedies of the past that drive these characters emerge, and the ultra-violent ending (best not to reveal), with its razor-sharp editing and tight framing, is one of the director's most dynamic.

Chapters 12

Arrow Films in the UK have released most of Russ Meyer's films in 2005 and "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" certainly remains the highlight. The image is fairly clean, with some boosted contrast and decent gray-scale. There is some subtle edge enhancement, but nothing horrible but there is chroma evident. The biggest flaw of the transfer is the occurrence of blurring/ghosting in some of the fast-paced action sequences. Still, the video quality is a vast improvement over any previous releases that I have seen.

The English audio is acceptable. There's some hiss in a couple of scenes, but nothing overly distracting. The dialogue is always clear and perfectly audible.

Bonus-wise, we first get two feature-length audio commentaries. The first features the stars of the film: Lori Williams, Tura Satana and Haji. They talk uninhibitedly about Russ Meyer, the working conditions of the film, their co-stars and much more. It's a very lively and entertaining track. Even more of a treat is an old Russ Meyer commentary imported from the Image laserdisc release. Meyer often simply comments on on-screen action, yet he's still able to give us a lot of background information, behind the scenes gossip and often waxes enthusiastically about the black and white photography and his female stars.

There's also a documentary called "Go Pussycat Go!" in which the main actresses as well as co-star Susan Bernard talk about the production and legacy of "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" It's a very nice addition to the commentaries. There are also a couple of Russ Meyer trailers on this disc, all of which are great fun.

While not a definitive release, Arrow's DVD presents this very entertaining cult film in solid video and audio quality plus plenty of interesting bonus material. Considering the low price are charging, this should be satisfying and a fun romp until a Special Edition might come along.
