Directed by Richard Rush
USA 1994

Cult filmmaker Richard Rush (The Stunt Man) directed this sexy murder-mystery starring screen legend Bruce Willis (Armageddon). Color of Night is the thrill-packed story of a psychologist haunted by the brutal murder of a friend and colleague. While hunting for the killer, he finds himself romantically entangled with a mysterious beauty (Jane March, The Lover) who leads him through a web of passion and intrigue. Lance Henriksen (Mind Ripper), Lesley Ann Warren (Clue), Rubén Blades (Disorganized Crime), Scott Bakula (TV’s Quantum Leap), Brad Dourif (Wise Blood), Kevin J. O’Connor (Deep Rising), Eriq La Salle, Jeff Corey and Shirley Knight co-star in this steamy and erotic thriller.

***

When New York psychiatrist Bill Capa (Bruce Willis, in an uncharacteristically un-smirking performance) visits Los Angeles to take over his murdered colleague's therapy group, he finds himself embroiled in the thick of a mystery when he bumps into (literally) Rosa (Jane March) and begins a torrid affair. Double-identities, death threats and love scenes abound as he delves deeper into the case to uncover the truth about his friend's death.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Kino Lorber's 'Special Edition' includes both original 122-Minute Theatrical Cut and the 140-Minute Director's Cut (both in 1.85:1) on separate Blu-rays. Both are on single-layered discs with modest bitrates and the theatrical looks superior to the longer Director's Cut which has differences in the frame and looks softer and darker. Neither image is particularly dynamic in appearance looking thick without a preponderance of grain but are damage-free and smooth in-motion. The Director's Cut is weaker visually, but overall provide a decent-enough, although unremarkable presentations that may have benefitted from being dual-layered (notably the longer DC cut). If we can compare to the Mill Creek Blu-ray one day - we will.

Both versions offer the option of DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround or 2.0 channel (16-bit) tracks in the original English language. There are effects (broken glass, rattlesnake etc.) but the thriller is more enhanced by a score by Dominic Frontiere (The Outer Limits, Brannigan, Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold, The Invaders TV series, The Stuntman) which includes The Color of the Night 'theme' performed by Lauren Christy as well as an instrumental version. Kino Lorber add optional English subtitles - only for the 'Director's Cut' Version - and both discs are Region 'A'-locked Blu-rays.

Supplements include an audio commentaries for bother versions,  a new one by director Richard Rush, with Elijah Drenner, on the 'Director's Cut' and by screenwriter Matthew Chapman, moderated by Heather Buckley, on the 'Theatrical Cut'. Rush provides plenty off details on the evolution of the production, the 'versions' and stories about filming etc. I have yet to complete the second commentary. There is also a trailer (on the DC disc) and an animated gallery on the Theatrical cut
Blu-ray.

Color of Night is a garden-variety thriller with some steamy sex. It has plenty of weaknesses but manages to hold your attention with excitement and the performances - although far from Willis's best. The Kino
Blu-ray will be appreciated by many fans of the film, or suspenseful thrillers in general - who have always been keen to see the Director's Cut - and the commentaries add value.
