(aka "Clue: The Movie" )

directed by Jonathan Lynn
USA 1985

Here is the murderously funny movie based on the world-famous Clue board game. And now, with this special videocassette version, you can see all three surprise endings! Was it Colonel Mustard in the study with a gun? Miss Scarlet in the billiard room with the rope? Or was it Wadsworth the butler? Meet all the notorious suspects and discover all their foul play things. You'll love their dastardly doings as the bodies and the laughs pile up before your eyes.

***

In this spoof of McCarthy-era paranoia and 1950s wholesomeness, the characters and plot are drawn from the popular Parker... Brothers board game of the same name. On a dark and stormy night in 1954, six individuals with ties to Washington are assembled for a dinner party at the swanky mansion of one Mr. Boddy (Lee Ving). Boddy's butler, Wadsworth (Tim Curry), assigns each guest a colorful name: Mr. Green (Michael McKean), Col. Mustard (Martin Mull), Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan), Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd), Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren), and Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn). Two additional servants, the Cook (Kellye Nakahara) and Yvette, the maid (Colleen Camp), assist Wadsworth as he informs the guests that they have been gathered to meet the man who has been blackmailing them: Mr. Boddy. When Boddy turns up dead, however, the guests must try to figure out who killed him so they can protect their own reputations and keep the body count from growing. Three separate endings were filmed for Clue and shown in different theaters; all three are collected for the video edition. Although the film is set in the 1950s, the original Clue game was actually devised by Anthony Pratt, a clerk in Leeds, England, to pass the time during World War II air-raid drills. First released in 1946 under the name Cluedo by British manufacturer Waddington's, Clue was renamed and released in the U.S. in 1949. Today, Clue/Cluedo is marketed in 70 countries around the world and has been adapted into a British game show and an off-Broadway musical.

Comments

NOTE: These Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Paramount - Region FREE - Blu-ray (July 2012): You get the option of the triple ending (Home Entertainment version) or a random selection of the three. Yes, there is obvious improvement in image quality - not overwhelming but it does exist. Skin tones warm, texture becomes more prominent. With the permanent timeline feature I had trouble with exact matches for some of the captures. The aspect ratio is still 1.78:1 and things do tighten up, contrast improves - colors support the older SD scheme. Overall the 1080P looks fine but nothing beyond that.

Audio is now lossless with a DTS-HD Master in original 2.0 channel stereo at 2085 kbps. This is mostly a dialogue film and effects are not abundant. It all sounds solid - with no flaws and we can assume it is as authentic as the original production. There are foreign language DUBs and subtitle options signifying its region FREE status. Supplements include the A, B or C ending as individual or as an 18-minute trilogy - as well as a theatrical trailer.

Cute film and genuinely amusing at times. Sexual references abound with the buxom maid constantly stroking candlesticks or fondling pool balls. I've always liked Madeline Kahn - she never disappoints. Although, for the price, I'd probably pass. Clue is not a film I need on Blu-ray. If you want some cheap laughs - the DVD is only $5.
