Directed by Max Allan Collins
USA 2005

Eliot Ness - the real-life gangbuster who brought down Al Capone tells his thrilling story as never before! From Robert Stack to Kevin Costner, Hollywood's glamorization doesn't compare. Max Allan Collins, whose graphic novel ROAD TO PERDITION became the Academy Award-winning Tom Hanks film, has brought his Edgar-nominated one-man show to the screen in a stylistic fashion. Star Michael Cornelison (THE FINAL SEASON, LOST IN AMERICA) presents a riveting portrait of a heroic yet human Ness. From the prohibition era of crashing stills and bringing down crooked cops, to taking on racketeering rings and nabbing the nation's first serial killer, it's all here, thrilling and true.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Although I loved Max Allan Collins' Quarry, my hopes were not high for appreciating his directorial effort Eliot Ness: An Untouchable Life.  It is put to dual-layered Blu-ray by VCI. The video procured image remains in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio and is transferred at an authentic 1080i. It looks as it looks - a bit waxy but watchable in-motion.

"
Eliot Ness: An Untouchable Life" is transferred with a linear PCM (16-bit) 2.0 channel track. There is no score or demonstrative effects and it sounds crisp and consistent. There are optional English SDH subtitles, in a smallish font, on this Region 'A' Blu-ray.

VCI have stacked this
Blu-ray with a number of extras starting with a commentary from writer/director Max Allan Collins, DoP Phillip W. Dingeldein, and star Michael Cornelison. It's very light with the trio enjoying each other's company and discussing Ness and the production. Also included is the 7.5 minute An Inconsequential Matter which also offers a commentary, plus excerpts from LIVE Show, "Eliot Ness" - a 5-minute film, a short deleted scene, some behind the scenes footage and trailers for Outride the Devil and the old Dick Tracy Serial.

I'm a fan of Max Allan Collins' work - whom I used to communicate with more regularly - his output always has a noir edge to it. Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks was based on Max's graphic novel. I'm not a fan of live theatre - I am always worrying that they will forget their lines or fall... but I liked this - a one-man show with keen insights into a legendary law-enforcement agent. It was fascinating but I doubt everyone would agree. Michael Cornelison does an admirable job and he makes the character his own in subtle ways. Those keen on Ness (whom Dick Tracy was based) need look no further.
