Directed by Alain Resnais
France 1986

Master director Alain Resnais (Last Year At Marienbad) blurs the line between cinematic technique and theatrical artifice in his acclaimed Mélo, adapted from Henri Bernstein's classic play about a doomed love triangle in 1920s Paris.

Pierre (Pierre Arditi, Love Unto Death) and Marcel (André Dussollier, A Good Marriage) are both celebrated concert violinists and lifelong friends, in spite of their differing temperaments. Pierre is modest, sensitive and content with his lot; Marcel is hungry, driven, and pursues a solo career that takes him to the four corners of the world. After years apart, the two friends reunite when Pierre invites Marcel to his home for dinner. It is then that Marcel first meets Pierre's wife Romaine (Sabine Azéma, Cosmos), sparking a passionate affair that can only end in tragedy before the curtain falls.

As thrillingly intimate on film as it was on the stage, Mélo's César award-winning cast and inventive direction are highlighted in a stunning new restoration, revealing a hidden gem in Resnais celebrated body of work waiting to be rediscovered.

***

Director Alain Resnais faithfully adapted his script for Melo from a 1929 play by Henry Bernstein--the first time that Resnais handled his own screenplay. Violinists and lifelong friends Pierre Arditi and Andre Dussolier have each found happiness in adulthood, but only Dussolier has become famous. Ardati leads a contented life with his wife, Sabine Azema, little suspecting that she is enamored of Dussolier. An abortive plan to murder her husband leads to Azema's suicide, but Ardati remains blissfully unaware of her infidelities. When the truth is revealed to Ardati, Dussolier honors the memory of Azema by insisting that no illicit romance ever occurred. One of the more "linear" of Resnais' works, Melo, filmed in 1986, was given a general American release three years later.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Arrow Video transfer Alain Resnais' "Mélo" to  Blu-ray via a "Brand new 2K restoration of the film". It's on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. It is in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio. There are some pleasing, consistent textures in the presentation but colors have a blue-teal leaning. I didn't find it extensive but it exists. The frequent dark scenes showed no noise. The predominant grain support provided a very film-like viewing.

The audio is transferred in a linear PCM mono track (24-bit) in the original French-language. option of a similarly encoded 5.1 surround track that does have some separation in the film's many effects. There is a score credited to Philippe-Gérard. The audio quality is decent and dialogue is clear and audible. There are optional English subtitles on this Region FREE
Blu-ray.

Arrow add many supplements starting with a newly-filmed 1/4 hour introduction by critic Jonathan Romney discussing Resnais and the production. There are over 1.5 hours worth of archival interviews with director Alain Resnais, producer Marin Karmitz, actors Pierre Arditi and André Dussolier, script supervisor Sylvette Baudrot and set designer Jacques Saulnier - with optional English subtitles. There is also a theatrical trailer, the package has a reversible sleeve featuring original artwork and for purchasers of the first-pressing an illustrated collector s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Bilge Ebiri.

Mélo is wonderfully rich, fascinating, simple, human, Rhomer-esque and very French cinema - filled with monologues, conflicts, desire - all wrapped up in Resnais' brilliance.  The
Blu-ray transfer is pleasingly texture-heavy and there are plenty of supplements to enjoy enhancing appreciation. I'm so glad that I saw it in HD with the extras to help digest the film experience.
