Directed by Charles Jarrott
USA
1977

Directed by Charles Jarrott (Anne of the Thousand Days), The Other Side of Midnight (1977) is a spectacularly epic adaptation of Sidney Sheldon’s melodrama focusing on the rise of a French shopgirl, Noelle (the great Marie-France Pisier). After a torrid World War II-era love affair with an American pilot, Larry (John Beck), leaves her abandoned and pregnant, Noelle vows revenge – which includes becoming a fashion model, an international movie star, and the mistress of a staggeringly wealthy Greek tycoon (Raf Vallone). Susan Sarandon co-stars as Larry’s perky post-war wife, and Clu Gulager is thankfully around, too. Appropriately fabulous score by Michel Legrand, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The Twilight Time 1080P transfer is in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio on another dual-layered Blu-ray with a supportive bitrate. The HD presentation looks fairly unremarkable but probably authentic to the film's original appearance with a softer lens possibly utilized. There is no damage or digitization and some colors do exhibit a pleasing depth. The Blu-ray visuals seem like a reasonable representation of 1977's The Other Side of Midnight.

Twilight Time again give the option of a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel stereo transfer at 24-bit in the original English language.
The, frequently romantic, score by the iconic Michel Legrand (The Thomas Crown Affair, Cleo From 5 to 7, Castle Keep, La Piscine, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, A Woman is a Woman, Ice Station Zebra) sounds excellent - including Noelle's Theme - in the lossless.  This music, and some effects, is available in an isolated track option. There are optional English (SDH) subtitles on the region FREE Blu-ray disc.

Aside from the isolated music, and some effects, track option there is an audio commentary with producer Frank Yablans, director Charles Jarrott, author Sidney Sheldon, and Film Historian Laurent Bouzereau as found on the older DVD (2007?) and comprises separate interviews sewn together and hosted by Bouzereau. There is also an original theatrical trailer and liner notes.

The Other Side of Midnight is quite soapy and, often, silly. It tries to exist on an overabundance of wide-eyed superficialities including some nudity and sex thrown in but never achieves it's epic aspirations. It can't be taken seriously as cinema - more like a Harlequin romance novels aren't serious literary works. The a/v presentation and commentary have value for those without a discerning suspension of disbelief and are keen on the fluff aspects of this overly-long melodrama. Saying that I did like
The Other Side of Midnight's surprise ending. The Blu-ray, is at Twilight Time's usual highly-competent level.
