Directed by Michael Mann
USA 1979
Legendary filmmaker Michael Mann (Thief, Heat,) made his feature-length directorial debut with this classic TV movie starring the incredible Peter Strauss (Soldier Blue) as Rain Murphy, a man serving a life sentence for killing his father. A man whose home is Folsom Prison, a place where only the toughest breed of criminals – murderers, rapists and armed robbers – are sent. His passion is running… he runs to escape the mean and hopeless life he must lead; to free himself from the inmate tensions and power struggles. Then he’s given a chance… a chance to train for the Olympics… a chance at glory and freedom. The stellar cast includes Richard Lawson (Poltergeist), Roger E. Mosley (TV’s Magnum, P.I.) Brian Dennehy (F/X), Geoffrey Lewis (Thunderbolt and Lightfoot), Billy Green Bush (Monte Walsh), Ed Lauter (Breakheart Pass), Beverly Todd (Lean on Me), William Prince (The Gauntlet) and Richard Moll (TV’s Night Court). Winner of three Emmy Awards including Best Actor and Teleplay (Patrick J. Nolan and Michael Mann) and Emmy Nominee for Outstanding Drama or Comedy Special. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.ADDITION: (June 2018) Kino - Region 'A' - Blu-ray: This is described as a "Brand New HD Restoration from the Original Camera Negative!", and this TV production (although shown theatrically in 1.66:1) looks excellent in 1080P. It's on a single-layered Blu-ray, but the source was in strong condition and the visual presentation looks crisp with plenty of depth. The infrequent interior sequences are dark - flesh tones are warm. It looks very clean and pleasing in-motion. Audio is transferred in DTS-HD Master (16-bit) in 2.0 channel. There are effects and a nice score by Jimmie Haskell and many will recognize The Rolling Stones song at the beginning "Sympathy For the Devil" working wonderfully well. There are no subtitles and the Blu-ray disc is Region 'A'-locked. Supplements include an audio commentary by Film Historian Lee Gambin who sees The Jericho Mile as a race relations film not simply a prison/sports genre film. He makes plenty of references, not all relevant, for the cast and crew - noting director Mann as a runner - the prisoners bettering themselves, Strauss' preparation, black/white friendships in film etc,. I liked the link to Straight Time - a excellent film written by Mann. It has a lot of information. There is also a short trailer with no audio. The Jericho Mile is a memorable film - it has the cache of both 'prison' and 'sports' appeal. Michael Mann subtly shows his directing skills and it's impressively realized. The commentary adds further value and it certainly recommended! Thanks Kino for bringing this to Blu-ray! |
