Directed by William Beaudine

USA 1925

Mary Pickford plays a tomboy of the tenements in this comedy drama, which she also wrote. Filmed over ten weeks, Little Annie Rooney was shot entirely on a set created by art director John D. Schulze at the Pickford Fairbanks Studio. Co-starring William Haines and a wide-ranging, multi-ethnic cast, Little Annie Rooney met with huge critical and commercial success upon its original release, proving fans and critics alike wanted the then 33-year old Mary to stay a child forever.

Created from the original tinted nitrate print in Mary Pickford's personal collection at the Library of Congress, Little Annie Rooney was preserved photochemically by the Academy Film Archive. A new 35mm preservation master was then scanned at 4K high definition so that the Mary Pickford Foundation, in cooperation with AMPAS, could create a digital version to perfectly match the original nitrate tints and tones. Andy Gladbach composed a new, original soundtrack for the film, which features a 12 piece orchestra, including three percussionists.

Little Annie Rooney includes a souvenir booklet featuring rare photographs and essays by Cari Beauchamp.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The 1.31:1 image is housed on a single layered Blu-ray disc with a supportive bitrate. The image has great detail visible in almost every frame. Though there are signs of damage here or there, this is to be expected in a film of this age. This is a fantastic transfer, best described in the included booklet, "The process of restoring and scoring this Little Annie Rooney took several years. The original tinted nitrate print in Mary Pickford's personal collection at the Library of Congress, made from the camera negative in 1925, was brought to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences archive in Los Angeles. The Academy Film Archive preserved the film photochemically, creating new 35mm preservation masters and prints. The preservation master was then scanned at 4K high definition so that the Mary Pickford Foundation, in cooperation with AMPAS, could create a digital version, evaluating the film frame by frame, removing dirt and other signs of deterioration to perfectly match the original nitrate tints and tones. Then, through the MPF Composition Program at Pepperdine University, an extremely gifted young composer, Andy Gladbach, was chosen to create a new soundtrack for the film. Mentored by professionals, Gladbach was joined by a 12-piece orchestra that included three percussionists, as well as a conductor and engineers, to record his original music. The end result combines and showcases the finest work of artists, craftspeople and musicians from this century and from 1925. This 4K high-resolution restoration with an original modern soundtrack provides today's audience with the ultimate viewing experience of this 90-year-old film." - Cari Beauchamp

Flicker Alley give us the option of watching "Little Annie Rooney" with a new score from composer Andy Gladbach. This score follows the beats of the film rather well, and features some lovely orchestrations. This track is in 24-bit 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

The sole extra on the
Blu-ray disc is a 5-minute piece on the film's new score. Andy Gladbach is the composer for the film, and in this interview we get to see a bit of behind-the-scenes for the recording of the new score, as well as excerpts from a live performance. Gladbach's score is a great achievement and serves the film well, while still having a unique sensibility. There is also a booklet accompanying the disc, with writing from Cari Beauchamp on the filming, casting, and restoration of "Little Annie Rooney", there is also a piece written by Andy Gladbach on his score for the film. There are also various pictures from the film and its production.

Flicker Alley are hard to beat when it comes to restoring silent films and this release is no exception. Thanks to the co-operation of the Mary Pickford Foundation, Flicker Alley have released another stellar transfer. Highly recommended
Blu-ray.
