Directed by Alex Ross Perry
USA 2015

Catherine (Elisabeth Moss) has entered a particularly dark period in her life: her father, a famous artist, has recently died, and on the heels of his death she's dumped by her boyfriend James. Looking to recuperate, Catherine heads out to her best friend Virginia's (Katherine Waterston) lake house for some much needed relaxation. Tranquility eludes her, however, as she's instantly overcome with memories of time spent at the same house with James the year before. Moreover, she finds no solace from Virginia, who is spending increasing amounts of time with a local love interest, Rich (Patrick Fugit). Before long fissures in the relationship between the two women begin to form, sending Catherine into a downward spiral of delusion and madness. A bracing, eerie look at the sometimes dangerously deep bonds of friendship, QUEEN OF EARTH is a thrilling examination of a troublingly complex relationship.

Following on from his indie smash, Listen Up Philip, Alex Ross Perry returns with a much darker thrilling examination of a deeply complex relationship between two women at the extremities of misery.

Catherine (Elisabeth Moss) has entered a particularly dark phase in her life: her father, a famous artist whose affairs she managed, has recently died, and on the heels of his death she's dumped by her boyfriend James (Kentucker Audley). With relaxation and the idea of gathering her thoughts, Catherine heads to her friend Virginia's (Katherine Waterston) lake house for some much needed rest. However, once Catherine arrives relaxation proves impossible to find, as she is overcome with memories of time spent at the same house with James the year before. As cracks in the relationship between the two women begin to appear, Catherine soon starts descending into a downward spiral of delusion and madness.

A bracing, eerie look at the deep bonds of friendship and the horrific effects of such bonds being frayed, Queen of Earth is an extremely dark study of the effects that the two women's misery has upon their own relationship.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: IFC Films Blu-ray (January 2024): IFC Films have transferred Alex Ross Perry's Queen of Earth to Blu-ray. The Masters of Cinema group produced a Blu-ray of the film in 2016 - that we reviewed HERE. The film was shot on 16mm but looks quite fetching and has a few differences from the older 1080P. These colors look a shade superior to me (cooler flesh tones losing the orange hue), but I imagine most will find the disparity negligible. We've compared a couple of captures below. I love this film's textures and close-ups - extremely thick and film-like.

On their Blu-ray, IFC Films use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) in the original English language. Queen of Earth has a minor few separations with an overall vιritι feel. The score was by Keegan DeWitt (Listen Up Philip) and was released by Waxwork Records on vinyl in 2018. It supports the film well sounding mysterious and effective. IFC Films offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The IFC Films Blu-ray include the 2016 audio commentary from director/writer Alex Ross Perry and Elisabeth Moss filling in some further details of the production, characters and story. Well worth the indulgence. IFC include a new commentary by writer / director Alex Ross Perry, cinematographer Sean Price Williams, and actress Hari Nef (Barbie.) Perry recalls what they thought when making the film - and introducing Moss through this role, production quirks and much more. There is also a new 1/4 interview with composer Keegan DeWitt. He is the lead singer of the indie rock band Wild Cub, as well as a composer Queen of Earth's film score.  Included is a 2012, 1/2 hour, video conversation with writer/director Alex Ross Perry and actress Katherine Waterston (Virginia.) I enjoyed the new 18-minute video essay by Samm Deighan sharing her observant features of the film and subtle meanings sharing within the history of cinema. Lastly, a theatrical trailer and the same 7-minuites of 'behind the scenes' footage also found on the MoC Blu-ray. The package includes a liner notes booklet with essay by writer Alexandra Heller-Nicholas (author of Found Footage Horror Films: Fear and the Appearance of Reality.)

It was interesting revisiting Alex Ross Perry's Queen of Earth after almost 8-years and view it through a lens of how the world has changed in that time. It remains a very Bergmanesque effort - like a chamber-piece - and Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man, Top of the Lake, Listen Up Philip) has this quality of manic expression that is... rare. Queen of Earth becomes all about her madness, relationships, reflections of her father - verbalizing or through flashbacks. The serenity of the lake seems calming - centering the two friends back to perceived normalcy - if only temporarily.  It's a rich, layered, narrative that has held up incredibly well. The IFC Blu-ray has advanced quite a lot over the 2016 Masters of Cinema - with an uptick in the appearance, they include the older commentary and a new one, a revealing video essay, booklet, beautiful cover etc. Quite a good film and affecting performance - I will be keeping this. Absolutely recommended!
