(aka "L'innocent" or "The Innocent")

Directed by Louis Garrel
France 2022

Part crime thriller, part romantic comedy, Louis Garrel’s The Innocent shows the dangerous and outlandish lengths two men go to for the women they love. Garrel stars as Abel, an aquarium educator whose mother, Sylvie (Anouk Grinberg), marries one of her drama pupils in the local penitentiary, Michel (Roschdy Zem). Once on parole, Michel attempts to start a legitimate life but soon reverts to his old ways, eventually roping Abel into one of his schemes. Complicating matters is Clémence (Noémie Merlant), Abel’s brazen coworker, who convinces him to take part in the heist. Directing from a screenplay he cowrote (with Tanguy Viel and Naïla Guiguet), Garrel explores the comedic results of playacting’s intrusion into reality, as well as reality’s comedic tendency to transform us into what we never thought we could be.

***

The story centres on Sylvie, a nearly sixty-year-old woman who has fallen in love with Michel, a thug she marries in prison. The two of them dream of starting again with a clean slate by opening a flower shop. But Sylvies son Abel, convinced that Michel will fall into a life of crime, disapproves of this relationship.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Janus Contemporaries Blu-ray (October 2023): Janus Contemporaries have transferred Louis Garrel's L'innocent (The Innocent) to Blu-ray. "Janus Contemporaries releases Blu-ray and DVD editions of first-run films, fresh from theaters, in association with Criterion." This 1080P image quality is excellent because it is: a) a modern film and b) has a max'ed out bitrate on a dual-layered disc.

On their Blu-ray, Janus Contemporaries use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) in the original French language. L'innocent has few aggressive moments that come through with modest depth with a few adroit separations, and score by Grégoire Hetzel (Incendies, A Christmas Tale, The Tree), sounding clean with consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. Janus Contemporaries offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Janus Contemporaries Blu-ray offers Meet the Filmmaker - an 18-minute new interview with director Louis Garrel where he talks about the film, his career as actor and director. There is also a theatrical trailer.

Louis Garrel is the grandson of French actor Maurice Garrel and the son of director (and sometimes actor) Philippe Garrel (Regular Lovers.) In his own comedy, thriller, romantic L'innocent Louis Garrel plays "Abel" again - this alter-ego for the fourth time in his acting career. L'innocent involves a mother falling for, and marrying, a soon-to-be ex-con (after 5-years in prison for armed robbery), an expensive Caviar heist, and romantic sex at a large Aquarium. So its a mix of genres, with intelligent dialogue and deadpan humor. Janus Contemporaries bring this sly French cinema gem to Blu-ray in their initial offering of this appreciated new sub-label. Absolutely recommended!
