(aka "IO")

Directed by Jerzy Skolimowski
Poland / Italy / United Kingdom 2022

Legendary director Jerzy Skolimowski created one of his freest and most visually inventive films yet with this story of a gray donkey named EO. After being removed from an itinerant circus, EO begins a trek across the countryside, experiencing cruelty and kindness from a cast of characters including an Italian countess (Isabelle Huppert) and a Polish soccer team. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature, and featuring stunning cinematography by Michał Dymek coupled with Paweł Mykietyn’s resonant score, EO presents the follies and triumphs of humankind from the perspective of its four-legged protagonist on a quest for freedom.

***

The world is a mysterious place when seen through the eyes of an animal. EO, a grey donkey with melancholic eyes, meets good and bad people on his lifes path, experiences joy and pain, endures the wheel of fortune randomly turn his luck into disaster and his despair into unexpected bliss. But not even for a moment does he lose his innocence.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Janus Contemporaries Blu-ray (October 2023): Janus Contemporaries have transferred Jerzy Skolimowski's EO to Blu-ray. "Janus Contemporaries releases Blu-ray and DVD editions of first-run films, fresh from theaters, in association with Criterion." This 1080P image quality is excellent because it is: a) a modern film and b) has a max'ed out bitrate on a dual-layered disc. I clock it in at about 1.44:1 (not the 1.33:1 as stated on the Criterion website.) The film is supported by some impressive photography by DoP Michal Dymek with a few unique cinematographic effects. The image is precise, consistent, obvious pristinely clean, and has shows strong detail in many of the close-ups. All good.

Dymek says “EO offered me unbelievable artistic freedom, which I have never had before in my short professional career".

On their Blu-ray, Janus Contemporaries use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) in the original Polish language. EO has a bunch of aggressive moments and a handful of sneaky separations that come through crisp and adeptly in the lossless. The gentle and haunting score was by Pawel Mykietyn (Elles), sounding solitary and beautiful interrupted with minimal dialogue during the HD presentation. Janus Contemporaries offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Janus Contemporaries Blu-ray offers a a new 24-minute conversation with writer-director Jerzy Skolimowski and writer-producer Ewa Piaskowska entitled "The Making of “EO". "All the Donkeys" is an introduction to the six Sardinian donkeys who play EO. Lastly is a trailer. There is a liner notes leaflet with an essay by Michael Joshua Rowin and color photos.

Taking inspirations from Robert Bresson’s Au Hasard Balthazar, director Jerzy Skolimowski’s EO follows the journey of a sentient, Polish circus, donkey. EO sees the countryside, a large dam, a stream and a wind farm while becoming friendly with some human and other animals. The Janus Contemporaries Blu-ray represents a great choice of film on the slate to initiate this new sub-label. EO was ranked fourth on Cahiers du Cinéma's top 10 films of 2022 list. Yes that's Isabelle Huppert as the Countess! A strong recommendation!
