(aka "Mob Rule" or "The Mob")

USA 1936

Joe Wilson, a wrongly jailed man thought to have died in a blaze started by a bloodthirsty lynch mob, is somehow alive. And dead to all he ever stood for and perhaps ever will. Because Joe aims to ensure his would-be executioners meet the fate Joe miraculously escaped. Spencer Tracy is Joe, Sylvia Sidney is his bride-to-be, and Fury lives up to its volatile name with its searing indictment of mob justice and lynching. In his first American film, director Fritz Lang (Metropolis, The Big Heat) combines a passion for justice and a sharp visual style into a landmark of social-conscience filmmaking. In the 49 years before this movie's release, some 6,000 people in the U.S. were victims of lynch mobs. The Fury over those tragedies -- and over other injustices to come -- remains.

***

When a wrongly-accused prisoner barely survives a lynch-mob attack and is presumed dead, he vindictively decides to fake his death and frame the mob for his supposed murder.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Warner Archive Blu-ray (September 2023): Warner Archive have transferred Fritz Lang's Fury to Blu-ray. It is a notable upgrade form the 2005 individual release or the one in Warner's Controversial Classics Collection DVD collection - reviewed HERE. Contrast is better layered (deeper black levels), there is more information in the frame - mostly on the left edge, there is more grain in 1080P and there are instances of depth. It's on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and the HD presentation is clean and very pleasing.

NOTE: We have added 66 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Warner Archive use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. Fury has a mob scene in front of the jailhouse and blazing fire but is mostly passive after that. The score is by Franz Waxman (Bride of Frankenstein, Untamed, Rebecca, Dark Passage, Rear Window, Sunset Boulevard etc.)  sounding clean supporting the building desperate, tragic mood. Warner Archive offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Warner Archive Blu-ray offers the 2005 commentary by Peter Bogdanovich and recorded Fritz Lang. Lang is heard from recordings made in 1965 over 4 days as Bogdanovich interviewed him in his hotel room. There are some amazing comments from Lang - who speaks excellent English and is very articulate. Bogdanovich responds to the 40-year old remarks and makes some observations like the character of Joe's misspelling giving him a representation of an 'everyman - the protagonist changed from a lawyer to a mechanic, the film being major departure for MGM etc. It still holds up well and is very much worth indulging in. There is also a theatrical trailer for Fury

Fritz Lang's Fury was the director's first American film and was from a story Mob Rule by Norman Krasna adapted by Bartlett Cormack and Lang. Krasna penned screwball comedies centered on cases of mistaken identity. Fury is a brilliant portrait of society's ability to have its building rage fueled... including extrajudicial murder when seeking a villain for community ills. It doesn't matter if he/she is the appropriate transgressor - only that the mob can appease their hyped sense of vengeance. The realism is shockingly plausible. The Warner Archive Blu-ray has a Fritz Lang film looking and sounding great with a commentary. I think Fury should be a mandatory part of all cinephile digital libraries.
