Directed by Bob Gill
USA 1976

When Lee, a high class New York lawyer, is dumped by the beautiful, yet cold, Holly, with whom he’d been having an affair, his bruised ego jumps at the chance to get back at her through blackmail. Lee hires a gangster pal, Nicastro, to bug Holly’s favorite no-tell-motel room, in the hope of catching her in the act - on tape - with her new younger lover, thus collecting evidence that could destroy her marriage. However, the plans immediately begin to go awry as Nicastro hires a two bit lecher, Archie, and his own heroin addicted girlfriend, Kim, to run the job. It’s not long before Lee is in a heap of trouble as sex, drugs, and even murder foil his plans.

Made by a team of “mainstream” filmmakers who sought to create a hard boiled, hardcore thriller that would stand a cut above the competition, Bob Gill’s THE DOUBLE EXPOSURE OF HOLLY achieved just that with its smart, complex script by character actor Ronan O’Casey (1984), and casting a host of some of New York’s finest sex film thespians, among them Terri Hall (THE STORY OF JOANNA), Jamie Gillis (THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN), Bobby Astyr (CORRUPTION), Annie Sprinkle (DEEP INSIDE ANNIE SPRINKLE), while starring one of the most enigmatic actresses of mid 70s smut, Catharine Burgess (THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS). Featuring an impressive jazz score by Stan Free (MOONLIGHTING WIVES) and a suitably grim sensibility.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray (March 2023): Vinegar Syndrome (under their 'Peekarama' sub-label) have transferred Bob Gill's The Double Exposure of Holly to Blu-ray. It is cited as being "Newly scanned & restored in 2K from its 35mm original camera negative". It looks quite strong with a few weaker scenes that were probably inherent as part of the original production. Close-ups show detail and certain colors (reds) export depth. It's in the origin al 1.33:1 aspect ratio with a high bitrate. There are a few speckles but it probably only looked this good theatrically - if that.

On their Blu-ray, Vinegar Syndrome use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. The Double Exposure of Holly has mild aggressive moments (unfired guns and cars supposedly driving over a junkie pedestrian) that come through with no significant depth. There is an oddly appealing jazz score by Stan Free (Flesh and Lace) adding somewhat to the 70's flavor. Vinegar Syndrome offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray offers a 5-minute trailer and 17-minutes of 'alternate soft scenes' that appeared pretty 'hard' to this reviewer. There is a reversible sleeve included.

Bob Gill's The Double Exposure of Holly is the director's only work - he is better known as a graphic designer who, reputedly designed the Beatles first Apple records album cover. He is also cited on Wikipedia as a 'title designer' for several Ray Harryhausen films. The lead gal is very pretty; Catharine Burgess... or Catherine Erhardt... or Catherine Randolph... or Cary Lacy... or Catherine Earnshaw (as she is in The Double Exposure of Holly). She's naked alright but the intercourse is no where near as graphic as the mainstays. Personally, I preferred Veronica Hart in Pandora's Mirror, which I recommend ahead of this title, although admittedly, we barely scratch the surface of the hardcore genre even with a name like 'DVDBeaver'. There's drugs, blackmail, gangsters and their molls - all squeezing into The Double Exposure of Holly but it's all very surface and the porn doesn't really carry enough interest. The Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray is as close to bare-bones as they get. There are fans who relish the nostalgia of this industry's 70's era with performers like Annie Sprinkle, Nancy Dare, Jamie Gillis etc. All are here shamelessly having sex... yes. To each his own.
