(aka "The Islander")

Directed by Richard Wilson
USA 1958

Esther Williams (Million Dollar Mermaid, The Unguarded Moment) and Jeff Chandler (Foxfire, Female on the Beach) set the screen ablaze in this romantic South Seas noir directed by Richard Wilson (Al Capone, Pay or Die!). On a small Mediterranean island live Costanza (Rossana Podestà, Ulysses), her father Urbano (Eduardo De Filippo, The Gold of Naples), and beachcomber Moore (Chandler), whom she plans to marry. Into this Eden come two plane crash survivors, supermodel Laura (Williams) and her playboy friend Wally (Carlos Thompson, Mistress of the World). The beautiful Laura becomes a bad influence, especially when love triangles start to develop. Breathtakingly shot in CinemaScope by Italian cinematographer Enzo Serafin (Journey to Italy).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (January 2023): Kino have transferred Richard Wilson's Raw Wind in Eden to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 2K Master!" For the most part it looks quite pleasing in the CinemaScope 2.35:1 aspect ratio with only a very few misaligned sequences (see samples below.) It's a beautiful film with wonderful 'South Seas' landscapes (really the Tuscan coast between Rome and Pisa) and vibrant costuming. There is depth and layered contrast - it is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate.

NOTE: We have added 56 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master  2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. Raw Wind in Eden has some hollow gunfire, boating etc. and a score by Hans J. Salter (Man Without a Star, Black Friday, The Spider Woman Strikes Back, The Killer that Stalked New York, The Strange Door, Cover Up, Man Without a Star, Scarlet Street, The Land Unknown, The War Lord, The Mole People, The Strange Case of Doctor Rx) with The Magic Touch sung by Esther Williams (dubbed.) I may have noticed some minor sync issues - more in the first 1/3. of the film. It sounds clean and consistent in the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by two of my favorites; film historian David Del Valle and film historian/filmmaker Daniel Kremer. They inform us that this is the first ever video releases of Raw Wind in Eden. They talk about the film's exotic travelogue qualities, a lot on Esther Williams, the director Richard Wilson and his alliance with Orson Welles and much more. I found it highly informative. There is also a theatrical trailer for Raw Wind in Eden as well as a few other films.

Raw Wind in Eden is gorgeous and the plot is appealing if a bit preposterous. Esther Williams plays a bored model drifting from man to man - encouraging jealousies - as she literally crashes onto a remote island. I was keen on the more mysterious Jeff Chandler character 'Mark Moore' - a once rich man - who gave millions to charity and has retreated to said island after being suspected of murdering his wife. Raw Wind in Eden seems to have elements of romance, film noir, an exotic locale travelogue and a fair amount of showcasing Esther Williams fit body. The Kino Blu-ray allows us to see this film - never before available on video or digital - looking impressive - with a rewarding commentary. I will definitely watch this again. Recommended!
