Today’s viewers may be baffled by the cinematic atrocities that midcentury filmgoers had to endure in order to witness naked bodies on screen. Released in the guise of educational documentaries, nudist films usually combined newly-shot material with cannibalized nudist films, stock footage, and decades-old ethnographic films, backed with needle-drop music, and processed under substandard lab conditions. Eventually, these Frankensteined films became a genre unto themselves, paving the way for the more gruesome Mondo films that would soon follow. Dan Sonney and Maurice Zouary’s Nudist Life (1961 - 1:12:36) follows a quintet of ringers in a Florida nudist colony. 10 Days in a Nudist Camp (1957 - 1:01:03) is a reworking and expansion of This Nude World (1932). In Dick Randall’s Shangri-La (1961 - 1:03:00), former Jerry Lewis impersonator Sammy Petrillo provides loads of cringe-inducing laffs while he lasciviously eyeballs the sun-worshippers.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (February 2023): Kino have transferred a bunch of 50's + 60's 'nudist' films to Blu-ray. This might be considered Kino's Blu-ray extension of their own Forbidden Fruit: Golden Age Exploitation Pictures edition of Unashamed: A Romance made in 1938 and Elysia (Valley of the Nude) from 1933 - that came out in 2020 - however Nudist Life, 10 Days in a Nudist Camp and Shangri-La are from the late 50's and 1960's. The bonus shorts are Back to Nature (1955), The Expose of the Nudist Racket (1938), Nature Girls (1952), Nudes, Nudists, and Nudism Around the World (1961) and Nudist Memories (1961.) Nudist Life is in pretty good shape - 10 Days in a Nudist Camp has a fair amount of damage marks and Shangri-La is just generally rough - possibly from 16mm and very worn. The shorts are about the same weaker quality.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. The film's audio also carries the production limitations but the narration is audible if of varying quality. There may have been some stock music used - quite static-infused at times - mostly light and fun stuff themed. Kino offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers only the five short films accompanying the 3 features. They are more of the same - either documentary style of feigning such to be transparently exploitive.

Nudist Life, 10 Days in a Nudist Camp and Shangri-La explore the social traits of other cultures comparing them to our own button-down societal structure making the essential the point that being 'nude' is natural. George Weiss' attempt to shock audiences with unabashed nudity showing a lot of vintage nudist camp footage succeeded to some degree although these efforts have faded from any post academic examination. They are quite a curiosity time capsule. It's refreshing to see people who are extremely comfortable with their bodies - allowing themselves to be filmed totally naked - mostly having fun - playing games, sun tanning, swimming etc. Almost everyone is quite slim and many of the girls are very attractive. I thought the Kino Forbidden Fruit: Golden Age Exploitation Pictures #14 Blu-ray was perfectly suitable to the series with lots of prancing naked females - only a few men - as a legitimate excuse to exploit this nudist camp culture. The a/v quality is varying but where else are you ever going to see stuff like this? I hang onto my Forbidden Fruit Blu-rays. I find them fascinating. My favorites remain #12 Peek-A-Boo / "B" Girl Rhapsody - a look at the Burlesque scene and #11 Girl Gang / Pin-Down Girl, both risqué, exploitive, crime melodramas.
