Directed by David Chung
Hong Kong 1987

Magnificent Warriors is a high-flying action romp! International sensation Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies, Supercop) stars in this incredible adventure set against the backdrop of World War II. Yeoh portrays a wisecracking mercenary pilot with a leather jacket, gun, and bullwhip who sets aside personal greed to defend a small town and free its leader from the clutches of the invading Japanese army! Filled with spectacular action sequences, Magnificent Warriors seamlessly blends sly humor with thrills. Yeoh's martial arts prowess, comedic flair, and dramatic skills are fully brought to bear in this incredible follow-up to the classic Royal Warriors. The finale, in which the town, armed only with spears and stones, rises up against the heavily fortified Japanese forces is not to be missed! Aerial battles, gunfights, hand to hand combat, Michelle Yeoh... Magnificent Warriors has it all!

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: 88 Films Blu-ray (February 2023): 88 Films have transferred David Chung's Magnificent Warriors to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 2K Restoration From the Original Camera Negative". It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. The 1080P presentation has depth, passive colors and reasonable detail. This appears to be a faithful rendition of the source and the HD presentation is consistent - not dynamic but serviceable.

On their Blu-ray, 88 Films offer the option of Linear PCM 2.0 channel tracks (24-bit) in the original Cantonese and an English language DUB. Magnificent Warriors has plenty of martial arts action, gunfire etc. with extravagant effects supported by audible bass. There is a score credited to Wing-leung Chan (The Iceman Cometh, Sex and Zen) and Renato Piccioni (only film credit.) sounding clean with consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. 88 Films offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The 88 Films Blu-ray offers a new audio commentary with Asian cinema expert Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival.) He talks about the Hollywood-esque features of the film and how it evokes Indiana Jones to some extent. He relates plenty of information on the cast and crew, the martial arts used in the film etc. He always knows his stuff - a good commentary. There are also 20-minutes worth of two separate, vintage, interviews with Michelle Yeoh and Tung Wai sharing memories of the production. Included are an English Opening Credit sequence, Hong Kong and English trailers and a stills gallery. The package contains a large folded poster and and a 40-page booklet with photos and essay.

David Chung's Magnificent Warriors was set in 1930s during the Second Sino-Japanese War - primarily waged between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan. In China, this conflict is often known as the "War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression". The story involves spies and espionage. Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian usually credited as 'Michelle Khan' in her early films frequently performing her own stunts. As many are aware - last year (2022), she was critically praised for her role in the absurdist comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once. She is the first Asian actress to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress! Magnificent Warriors is kind of fun with a lot of action - plus we get to see Michelle Yeoh acting and performing martial arts in a film made 35 years ago! The 88 Films Blu-ray has decent a/v, a commentary, interviews, poster and booklet. Recommend to fans of the genre - this is a complete package.
