(aka "Don't Deliver Us from Evil")

Directed by Joël Séria
France 1972

Two young convent girls become friends and decide to spend the summer together. However, their innocent bicycle rides and walks in the country soon develop a much more sinister side. Influenced by their reading of forbidden books, they decide to explore the world of perversion and cruelty. They find a victim and use their innocent appearance to seduce and destroy him. Once they have stepped over the line, they find it impossible to stop. And soon they are contemplating the ultimate evil act. Hugely controversial, the film was banned for blasphemy and was never released theatrically in the US. This first Blu-ray release is newly restored from the film's original negative and includes a number of exclusive extra features. The film was screened as part of the Directors Fortnight at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival.

***

Anne and Lore, neighbors and best friends, barely into their teens, board at a convent school where they have taken a vow to sin and to serve Satan. Anne keeps a secret diary, they read a salacious novel, they get a classmate in trouble, they spy on the nuns, they set aside their communion wafers; they make a pact of devotion.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Mondo Macabro Blu-ray (January 2023): Mondo Macabro have transferred Joël Séria's Don't Deliver Us from Evil (aka "Mais ne nous délivrez pas du mal") to Blu-ray. Eric reviewed their own DVD of the film in 2006 HERE. An opening screen states that "This film has been restored in 4K by EDITIONS MONTPARNASSE". There is a Montparnasse Blu-ray HERE with only French subtitles. It's remarkably different from the older SD transfer, with color shifts, it has a darker green / yellowish hue and the 1080P shows more information the frame on the right and top edges. The higher resolution exports the image quality in a superior, sharper, manner.

On their Blu-ray, Mondo Macabro use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original French language. Don't Deliver Us from Evil has few aggressive moments (fire, a beating, assaults etc.) that come through with modest depth and there is  an unremarkable score by Claude Germain and Dominique Ney, that has some church organ music and the oddness suited the film. Mondo Macabro offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Mondo Macabro Blu-ray offers an commentary by from Kat Ellinger. She informs us how Don't Deliver Us from Evil is one of the most transgressive, perverse and subversive films ever to come out of Euro-cult, and that France did not produce a lot of this category of films. She discusses Jean Rollin, how Jeanne Goupil wasn't really an actor - in this her first film - although she did act after this with over 30 roles. Kat talks about the sexuality in the film, Joël Séria, Catherine Breillat's famously banned novel - and her films, the Don't Deliver Us from Evil's fantasy scenes where the elder males often undress, the character of Anne being a 'dangerous innocent' and much more. It's always a pleasure to hear her thoughts and observations. There are repeat interviews from the DVD with Goupil and director Séria as well as the "Hellish Creatures" video piece which has crime writer Paul Buck finding parallels between the Don't Deliver Us from Evil and the 1954 Parker–Hulme murder case in Christchurch, New Zealand. Included is a new 22-minute interview with Joël Séria and the usual Mondo Macabro trailer reel.

Joël Séria's debut film Don't Deliver Us from Evil ranges from two nubile girls testing their blossoming sexuality by teasing older men to their bonding of 'blood sisters' in an unusual Satanic-allegiance ritual. There is the stealing of sacramental bread and poems about the beauty of death (Les Chants de Maldoror.) It's a bizarre euro-cult effort touching on religion, animal cruelty, murder and frivolous perversity enticement. It's pretty odd but also fascinating. The Mondo Macabro Blu-ray presents this film about a this pair of rebellious teen sociopaths in restored 1080P with a great commentary, new director interview and more. Adventurous world cinema viewers who appreciate euro -cult with want to have this in their collection.
