(aka "L'odore della notte" or "The Scent of the Night")

Directed by Claudio Caligari
Italy 1998

The Scent of the Crime (1998) is a provocative thriller in which a former policeman turns full-time criminal and goes on a downward spiral in 1990s Rome. Remo (Valerio Mastandrea) is a disgruntled cop who pads his income by raiding rich people’s houses with a group of thugs. Because of his hatred for discipline he is soon dismissed from the force, while continuing his criminal escapades full time…until he gets arrested. When he is released, he tries to live a normal life but the debts he has incurred keep pulling him back to the life of a robber.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Raro Blu-ray (November 2022): Raro have transferred Claudio Caligari's The Scent of the Night (L'odore della notte) to Blu-ray. It is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. It looks fairly pleasing in 1080P - kudos to the cinematography (Maurizio Calvesi). There isn't an abundance of texture or depth but it looks consistent, clean and the HD presentation is effective, if not dynamic.

On their Blu-ray, Raro use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original Italian language. The Scent of the Night has aggressive moments but the depth is fairly modest. There is a score credited to Aldo De Scalzi (brother of composer Vittorio De Scalzi - The Designated Victim) and Pivio, founding member of Italian new wave band Scortilla. It's a decent score rising and falling with the film's tempos. There is other music in the film including On Broadway, Boogie Takeover, (Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty, Getaway etc. Like the video the audio transfer is clean and consistent. Raro offer optional English subtitles (see sample below) on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Raro Blu-ray offers no extras.

Claudio Caligari's The Scent of the Night is loosely based on the novel Le notti di arancia meccanica by Dido Sacchettoni which was dedicated to the "clockwork orange band". Rome was under the grip of a series of ferocious home invasions, assaults and robberies against the wealthy. Enter Remo Guerra (strikingly handsome Valerio Mastandrea), a Roman policeman born and raised in the suburbs who works in Turin, but returns to Rome, while on leave, to carry out heists with his 'gang' composed only of Maurizio as driver and Roberto - Remo's bodyguard. The Scent of the Night was nominated for three Silver Ribbon, (Nastro d'Argento) Awards and premiered at the 1998 Venice International Film Festival. There are frequent echoes of Scorsese's Taxi Driver throughout The Scent of the Night.  It's a gripping film with subtle hints of addiction and total loss of humanity - a lead character who has succumbed to his darkest side. I was pleased to see the film on Raro's bare-bones Blu-ray. This is quite a good film.
