***

Rod Serling narrates an anthology of fantasy, horror and sci-fi stories from a set resembling a macabre museum. A chilling work of art serves as the connective link between the stories.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (November 2022): Kino have transferred Rod Serling's Night Gallery - Season Three to Blu-ray. They released Season One last November (2021) and we reviewed it HERE and Season Two, (in July 2022) reviewed HERE. It is cited as being "from 2K scans of the interpositives". Aside from a rare speckles these look exceptionally strong in 1080P. Like the first two seasons, colors are vibrant, contrast well-layered, plenty of depth and surprising detail in close-ups. The TV programs of this era were shot of film and always tend to look pristine in this higher resolution. There are 2 dual-layered Blu-ray discs with 15 episodes in total with plenty of commentaries as well as the "The Syndication Conundrum Part 3" (Parts one and two were on the earlier seasons Blu-ray sets.) Each episode is around 26-minutes (new time for Season three.) They have middling bitrates but look very satisfying in these HD presentations.

NOTE: We have added 120 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. Night Gallery had some format changes for Season three - even beyond the 1/2 hour episode length, new title sequence and being moved to Sunday night. There was a new opening and we lose the wonderful Gil Melle (The Victim, The Andromeda Strain, The Deliberate Stranger, Frankenstein: The True Story, 7 episodes of Kolchak the Night Stalker, Colossus: The Forbin Project, You'll Like My Mother, The Sentinel and The Organization) score. Instead these have Eddie Sauter (Mickey One, some may note his music on Vincent Gallo's Buffalo 66') music. This supports the episodes well enough but lacks the edgy, electronic-based, creepiness of Gil Melle. Audio quality is generally excellent in the lossless. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentaries - often two in an episode. A few feature comments by the cast, crew etc. Many of the commentarists had participated in the previous season Blu-ray releases including Kim Newman (author of Classic Monsters Unleashed) and writer/editor Stephen Jones (author of The Mammoth Book of Folk Horror: Evil Lives On in the Land!), Gary Gerani (co-author of Fantastic Television: A Pictorial History of Sci-Fi, the Unusual and Fantastic From Captain Video to the Star Trek Phenomenon and Beyond...), Jim Benson and Scott Skelton (authors of Rod Serling's Night Gallery: An After-Hours Tour - Television and Popular Culture and Rod Serling's Night Gallery: The Art of Darkness), Tim Lucas (author of Spirits of the Dead), Amanda Reyes (author of Are You In The House Alone?: A TV Movie Compendium 1964-1999.) Plus there are commentaries by David J. Schow, Dr. Reba Wissner, and others. Also included is Craig Beam's "The Syndication Conundrum Part 3"  detailing is the troubled existence after cancellation, still with decent ratings - and the awkward shift to the 1972 TV show The Sixth Sense with Serling as 'host' - conforming more to the studio's wishes. It finishes with all the Serling's intros to that 2 season series.

Season Three has another Who's Who of 70's TV and a handful of aged big screen stars like Vincent Price, Mickey Rooney, Raymond Massey, Burgess Meredith, plus many recognizable faces; Tisha Sterling (Coogan's Bluff), Bill Bixby (The Incredible Hulk), James Farentino, John Astin, Joanna Pettet (in all three seasons, Casino Royale etc.), Stuart Whitman, Barbara Anderson (Mission: Impossible and ToS), Ellen Corby (Vertigo), Alan Napier (Batman), Sandra Dee, Gary Lockwood, Joan Van Ark, Chuck Connors, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, Ross Martin, Burl Ives, Kenneth Tobey (The Thing from Another World), Leonard Nimoy, Geraldine Page, Lesley Ann Warren (as a sexy, legs spread, vampire), Dean Stockwell, Sally Field, Susan Strasberg etc. I liked quite a few of the episodes; The Return of the Sorcerer, The Girl with the Hungry Eyes (hypnotic Joanna Pettet and directed by John Badham!) Fright Night, Rare Objects, Spectre in Tap-Shoes, Death on a Barge (Nimoy's directorial debut) and The Other Way Out (always up for seeing, even a brief appearance, by Burl Ives.) There are a few that IMDb/Wikipedia list as season three that aren't here (the Syndication-only segments Die Now, Pay Later, + Room for One Less as well as Smile, Please with Lindsay Wagner plus How to Cure the Common Vampire with Richard Deacon.) I don't recall it being mentioned in "The Syndication Conundrum Part 3" extra but maybe I missed it - or possibly it's clarified in the commentaries that I haven't fully gone through. Anyway, this Blu-ray package is stacked with hours and hours of commentaries - along with a stellar 1080P image of 15 episodes from season three. If you have the first two - you'll want this with the final season as well.
