(aka "Naked Over the Fence")

Directed by Frans Weisz
Netherlands 1973

Rick Lemming (Rijk de Gooyer) is the operator and owner of a successful Amsterdam arcade. Along with his tenant Penny (Jennifer Willems), Rick's life takes a turn when their friend Ed (real-life black-belt Jon Bluming), a karate instructor, is hired to act in an art film with his girlfriend, the glamorous singer Lilly (Sylvia Kristel). Lilly and Ed find themselves unsuspectingly immersed in the illicit world of pornography--resulting in death threats and murder.

Frans Weisz's sexy comedy thriller turned cult classic Naked Over the Fence (Naakt over de Schutting) was the first major Dutch starring role of Sylvia Kristel right before she appeared in Emmanuelle

***

The 1973 Naakt Over de Schutting (Naked Over The Fence) movie featuring Dutch actors, Rijk de Gooyer, Jon Bluming, Sylvia Kristel, Ko Van Dijk amongst others, was loosely based on a book written by Rinus Ferdinandusse. Described as a 'Sriller' (Sarcastic thriller) this obscure B-movie was directed by Frans Weisz, features a silly plot, a comic karate fight and a not-so spectacular tram chase all the way to Artis Zoo, Amsterdam.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Cult Epics Blu-ray (August 2022): Cult Epics have transferred Frans Weisz's Naked Over The Fence to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "New 4K HD Transfer (from original negative) & Restoration" and is from 'Eye Museum'. It looks quite sharp, if decidedly blue-teal-ish. There is fine, appealing, grain textures and a bit of gloss in the 1080P. There is depth exported and colors can be quite intense and vibrant. They do look a shade embellished but the overall HD presentation is quite pleasing.

On their Blu-ray, Cult Epics offer two 2.0 channel dual-mono tracks (16-bit) in the option of DTS-HD Master or linear PCM both in the original Dutch language. There may be a slightly better support in the higher-end by the LPCM, but otherwise the tracks sound very similar - and quite good. Post-dubbing was not easily discernable. Naked Over The Fence has a lauded score by Ruud Bos as well as offering Herman Pieter de Boer's "A Letter Came Today" sung, in English, by slinky Sylvia Kristel. Dialogue is clear in the lossless transfer. Cult Epics offer optional English-translated subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Cult Epics Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Harry Hosman who is the biographer of the director Frans Weisz. He shares details of Weisz, his life and career as well as specifics on the production of Naked Over The Fence plus The Netherlands and, specifically Amsterdam at the time of the making of the film. His voice is very clear although he does have a slight Dutch accent. There is some good content here. There is also a 1978, 1/4 hour, featurette "Behind the-Scenes of Naked Over the Fence" prefaced with "Making Naked over The Fence, producer Rob de Mee hired a crew to shoot on 16mm behind the scenes, resulting in two hours of raw footage, never edited, including these 15 minutes featuring Sylvia Kristel during the rehearsal and shoot of her musical scene." It is in Dutch with optional English subtitles. We get an 8-minute, 2014, audio interview with director Frans Weisz set to stills and photos from the film - as well as composer Ruud Bos via a Vrije Geluiden Interview from 2015 running shy of a dozen minutes. There is a promotional gallery. Lastly are Sylvia Kristel film trailers including Frank and Eva, Julia, Pastorale 1943, Mysteries and Playing With Fire. The package has a second disc CD soundtrack by Ruud Bos. It is all housed in a slipcase with a double-sided sleeve. The CD and slipcover are limited to 1,000 copies.

Frans Weisz's Naked Over The Fence is an amusing comedy-thriller with a more provocative title than it delivers. Short-haired blonde Sylvia Kristel has a small but significant role with the added curiosity of her singing performance - augmented with her, expected, nakedness and usual blank, suggestive, visage. The film has some inconsistencies but is generally quite likeable with good characters. Naked Over The Fence biggest appeal is probably Kristel who does have the 'it' camera appeal - but it also showcase some nice 70's scenery of Amsterdam. It's an appealing 4K-restored transfer via the Cult Epics Blu-ray with educational commentary, extras and bonus CD. Yes, we can certainly endorse to any who may be keen.
