(aka "Gang" or "The Gang")
("Three Men to Kill" or "Three Men to Destroy")
Directed by Jacques Deray
France 1977 / 1980
THE GANG (1977): In 1945, as World War Two comes to a close, five small time crooks unite to form a gang lead by the charismatic Alain Delon. After several bold robberies they become notorious as “the front-wheel drive gang.” The police attempt to stop their crime spree with little success, but how long will their luck last?
THREE MEN TO KILL (1980): In this Gritty, violent and suspenseful thriller, Delon plays Gerfaut who comes to the aid of a man laying wounded in the road, not knowing the man has taken two bullets to the belly. Soon he becomes the target for the killers, who see him as a dangerous witness. But Gerfaut has been around the block a couple of times and he won’t be so easily eliminated. |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
Both transfers are on one dual-layered
Blu-ray. Gang
has noticeable green infiltration but the quality is consistent. Detail and
grain support are reasonable. Aside from the green, I see no artifacts,
damage or digitization. It may be faithful to the source or the original,
although I suspect the print has been compromised over the last 40-odd
years. Very watchable and an easily notch above SD.
Three Men to Kill
looks better with a few crushed black but natural colors and strong
detail. I had no issues with the HD presentation. I don't even know if a
more robust transfer would make significant improvement. It seems to be what
it is - no tinkering. Both films are in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio.

On their
Blu-ray,
Cohen Media use linear PCM mono tracks (both 16-bit) in the
original French language. Gang
especially has plenty of aggressive violence usually in the form of
gunfire. The uncompressed audio track exports some abundant bass. Three Men to Kill
has fewer aggressive moments but still many scenes with conflict, car
accident and gunfire. It sounds similar in terms of quality -
clean, flat but carry depth. The score for Gang
is by
Carlo Rustichelli (Night
Ripper,
The
Long Hair of Death,
The
Whip and the Body, Seduced
and Abandoned,
Divorce - Italian Style,
The Secret War of Harry Frigg,
1974's
Ten Little Indians)
and for Three Men to Kill the score was by Claude Bolling (Le
Magnifique.) Not overly remarkable audio but supportive of the
action films. Cohen Media offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Cohen Media
Blu-ray
Well as 'Jacques Deray - Alain Delon' Double
Feature. You could see these both - especially Three Men to Kill
- fitting in the
Neo-Noir category. While I wasn't as keen on Gang (Delon's
hair was goofy although accurate to his character I presume) as a
disorganized crime-gang
actioner, I loved Three Men to Kill
as Delon's 'Michel Gerfaut' gets caught in a strange
witness-assassination attempt - we can see that he's up for the
challenge. Yeah, there is value here on Cohen Media's bare-bones Blu-ray |
