Directed by Benoît Jacquot
France /
Belgium / United States 2019
Casanova, Last Love is the latest romantic ravishment from director Benoit Jacquot (Farewell, My Queen). London, 18th century. Casanova (Vincent Lindon), famous for his taste of pleasure and gambling, arrives from Paris, forced into exile. In this city he knows nothing about, the libertine meets on several occasions a young prostitute, Marianne de Charpillon (Stacy Martin). She attracts him to the point he starts disregarding all other women. The legendary seducer is ready to do anything to get her, but La Charpillon always escapes under various excuses. She challenges Casanova: “You will only have me if you stop desiring me!" *** Year 1763. Forced into exile, the famous libertine Giacomo Casanova leaves Paris and travels to London, where he meets Marianne de Charpillon, a young prostitute to whom he is so attracted that he forgets about the other women. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Cohen Media Blu-ray (October 2021): Cohen Media have transferred Benoît Jacquot's Casanova, Last Love ('Dernier amour') to Blu-ray. It is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. Casanova, Last Love appears to have been shot in HD with low-level lighting - perhaps only candles in the indoor night sequences evoking Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. With the extensive art direction the vérité of this eighteenth century period piece is prevalent. The 1080P image is as clean as you might anticipate and it has an occasional soft lens look appearing again like a style technique. Colors seem a bit pale - perhaps another intentional expression by Jacquot - costumes are ravishing. I actually liked the HD presentation - never crisp but is establishes its milieu highly effectively. NOTE: We have added 44 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE On their Blu-ray, Cohen Media offer the options of a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track or a 2.0 channel stereo (both 16-bit) in the original French (with brief English) language. Dialogue can be intentionally scattered to imbue further realism. Casanova, Last Love has a modest soundstage and a evocative score by Bruno Coulais (Belphegor: Phantom of the Louvre, Coraline), sounding clean plenty of quiet pauses in the lossless transfer. There is some operatic singing and, what sounds like a harpsichord. Cohen Media offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray. The Cohen Media Blu-ray offers only a trailer - which is too bad because a commentary would be greatly appreciated. Benoît Jacquot's Casanova, Last Love hasn't been critically embraced. It's provocative, deliberately paced and certainly arthouse leaning. The dialogue is curious, like the intentional image, giving away hints but little else with the tone and moods carrying the film's heavy period appeal. Stacy Martin really has a Jane Birkin thing going on - waif-like plainness with seductive, communicative eyes. I could find quite a bit to appreciate about Casanova, Last Love although its weaknesses may tip the balance for some viewers. A commentary would have helped a lot. I'm now interested to see Jacquot's Farewell, My Queen. The bare-bones Cohen Media Blu-ray provides a 1080P home theatre viewing experience for Casanova, Last Love that you'd unlikely find elsewhere. Adventurous cinephiles should indulge. |
