Directed by Christopher Petit
UK 1985

Adapted from P D James’ classic crime novel, this stylish, little-seen thriller stars Billie Whitelaw (The Omen, The Krays), Pippa Guard (The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady), Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark), and Dominic Guard (Absolution).

After finding her boss dead in his office, Cordelia Gray (Pippa Guard) takes over duties at his private detective agency. When a woman asks her to investigate the apparent suicide of a young man, she takes on her first case and gets entangled in a web of dark family secrets.

Presented in a brand new restoration from a 4K scan of the original negative, this powerful, unconventional thriller from filmmaker and novelist Christopher Petit – director of the cult classic Radio On – makes its worldwide debut on Blu-ray accompanied by new interviews with cast and crew.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Indicator Blu-ray (February 2022): Indicator have transferred Christopher Petit's An Unsuitable Job for a Woman to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "new restoration from a 4K scan of the original negative by Powerhouse Films". We looked confidentially, knowing Indicator's strong reputation and this is rendered to a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. Colors are rich, black levels solid and consistent supporting the image that has appealing textures. Very film-like and a strong appearance in 1080P.

On their Blu-ray, Indicator use a linear PCM 1.0 channel mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. An Unsuitable Job for a Woman has a couple of more aggressive sequences. It is authentically flat with modest depth and score by Chaz Jankel (1988's D.O.A.), sounding reasonably supportive of the mystery elements vie the uncompressed transfer. Indicator offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Indicator Blu-ray offers a half-hour with writer-director Christopher Petit who looks back on the origins and making of his second feature, An Unsuitable Job for a Woman. It is new and entitled Mise-en-scène of the Crime and I found it revealing. Also included are over a dozen-minutes with actor Dominic Guard ('Andrew Lunn' in An Unsuitable Job for a Woman) discussing his role and co-starring with family members in a supplement entitled A Bridge Too Far. Absolute Fascination is another new piece spending over 1/2 hour with producer Don Boyd who provides an in-depth account of the creation of An Unsuitable Job for a Woman. There is an original theatrical trailer, a VHS trailer and two image galleries of promotional materials and rare, previously unseen unit photography. The package has a liner notes limited edition exclusive 36-page booklet featuring a new essay by Claire Monk, an archival essay by Christopher Petit, production reports on the making of the film, an overview of contemporary critical responses, and film credits.

Christopher Petit's An Unsuitable Job for a Woman seems to have all the elements of a comfortable 'English country house mystery' and if you can suspend your disbelief for a couple of the more abrupt story shifts - it's quite a good thriller. It actually spawned a TV series of the same name in 1997 that ran for two seasons. Certainly it is a fairly gripping detective-crime plot with subtle characterizations if not completely realized well in the production which sports a more languid pace than some may enjoy. It's a rarely seen film and I was very glad to have viewed it via an Indicator Blu-ray as they never disappoint in terms of appreciative supplements and a strong a/v presentation. Better than I was expecting. Recommended!
