Created by Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson
UK 1964

Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's much-loved Supermarionation series - their first in color - has been remastered in High Definition from original 35mm film elements for this Blu-ray edition!

It is 2065 and the World Aquanaut Security Patrol submarine Stingray patrols the Earth's oceans. Captained by the heroic Troy Tempest and his sidekick 'Phones', they report to Commander Sam Shore and his daughter Atlanta at their Marineville base. The adventures begin when Troy and 'Phones' are captured by the undersea despot King Titan - and their only chance of rescue is Titan's slave, Marina!

***

Imagine a science fiction TV series about an organization called the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASP), which battles underwater threats from its West Coast headquarters in the year 2065. Commander Samuel Shore, who travels via a "hoverchair" due to paralysis, runs WASP with assistance from his daughter Atlanta. She's in love with Captain Troy Tempest, the handsome pilot of the super submarine Stingray. Troy returns her affections to a degree--but he's also attracted to Marina, a mute young woman from an underwater civilization. In fact, each episode ends with a love song about Marina ("What are these strange enchantments that start whenever you’re near?").

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Network Blu-ray (April 2022): Network have transferred Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's complete Supermarionation TV series Stingray to 'Deluxe' Blu-ray. It is advertised as "remastered in High Definition from original 35mm film elements". There is also a 'Super-Deluxe' Blu-ray version HERE (with a Luxury hardcover Memorabilia album, Replica Stingray pressbook, two bespoke artprintse and a Stingray aqua blue 7" vinyl) but it is already sold out. This Deluxe package has 5 BD discs - the first four having 10 X 26-minute episodes per dual-layered disc (described as a 'pilot' and 39 half-hour episodes.) There is a fifth Blu-ray with supplements and this package has a "Brand-new Mini Adventure CD" that I don't have to comment on. This is in 1080P although I believe the TV series in Britain would have been in PAL and this, therefore, should have been in 1080i to represent it accurately. Regardless, this look very impressive - a significant bump over SD - DVD. The source must have been in phenomenal condition and this 1.33:1 HD presentation will be thoroughly enjoyed by fans. The higher resolution does  show the marionette wires - in an expressionist manner - but effects are surprisingly strong all things considered. Colors (an impressive array of greens) are true with vibrant depth and the overall image is clean, with a minor mark or two, and a delight to watch on Blu-ray.

This is released via Network's website for Pre-order - posted in May, 2022 with two remastered and reconstructed Super Space Theater Stingray films (Incredible Voyage of Stingray and Invaders from the Deep) to be shipped separately to purchasers in the Summer of 2022.

NOTE: We have added 34 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Network use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. Stingray has plenty of aggressive moments and effects that come through modestly. However the score by Barry Gray (Journey to the Far Side of the Sun, and also worked with Gerry Anderson composing for Thunderbirds and Space 1999) composed the main opening theme and concluding 'love theme' Aqua Marina sung by Gary Miller remains effective and kitschy. The music is a nice variety of exciting, impactful, drama and some lighter humorous moments sprinkled throughout. It sounds as good as the pleasing image via the uncompressed transfer - tight and clean with consistent dialogue. Voice characterizations are by the likes of Ray Barrett, Robert Easton, David Graham, Don Mason and 'Miss Moneypenny' Lois Maxwell with the Marina character being mute. Network offer optional English subtitles (see sample below) on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Network Blu-ray offers a girth of extra features. There are Gerry Anderson commentaries on the 'pilot' and 'Standby for Action' episodes with the majority of the supplements on the 5th Blu-ray. The Reunion Party is a 40th episode HD remaster utilizing Japanese Stingray presentation footage. It runs over 1/2 hour. There are hours worth of featurettes including "We Are About to Launch Stingray!" for over 40-minutes, "Give-a-Show projector" image gallery lasting almost 11-minutes, Part two of a Sylvia Anderson interview, Walton Production Home Movies (over an hour), an image gallery, a Lincoln Toy Advertisement and it's preparation, a short Des O'Connor sketch, Ad Bumpers, French End Titles and Century 21 Tech Talk: Stingray. The package includes a Stingray WASP pilot license and badge, the previously mentioned brand-new 'Mini Adventure CD', a Stingray Ephemera Wallet, a brand-new Stingray comic and a brand-new Stingray book by archive television historian Andrew Pixley. In a word 'Stacked'.

Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's Stingray is brimming with childhood nostalgia. Stingray was the first British TV series to be made entirely in color. It was supplanted by Anderson's own Thunderbirds (1965-66). It still has a huge loyal following often considering it the pre-cursor to the animated Toy Story series that has a similar representation of marionettes. Stingray is so inventive using a combination of electronic marionette puppetry and scale model special effects. It's very easy to fall into the pretense and family-based under-water adventure and wholesome fun. "Stand by for action! We're about to launch Stingray! Anything can happen in the next half hour!"   Tons of innocent fun when you are fed-up with the world. There is almost 18-hours worth of Stingray! If you are keen on this Network Blu-ray I wouldn't wait to Pre-order. I expect it to also go out-of-print soon. Enjoy!
