Directed by Justine Triet
France /
Belgium 2019
A sly, sultry character study from filmmaker Justine Triet, SIBYL follows a psychotherapist (Virginie Efira) who decides to quit her practice and return to writing instead. As Sibyl starts dropping patients, she begins to struggle with excess time and a lack of inspiration--until she gets a call from Margot (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a young actress wrapped up in a dramatic affair with her costar, Igor (Gaspard Ulliel), who happens to be married to the film's director (Sandra Hüller). Becoming further enmeshed in Margot's life, Sibyl starts to blur past and present, fiction with reality, and the personal with the professional as she begins to use Margot's life as source material for her novel. *** Sibyl, a jaded psychotherapist, returns to her first passion: writing. But her newest patient Margot, a troubled up-and-coming actress, proves to be a source of inspiration that is far too tempting. Fascinated almost to the point of obsession, Sibyl becomes more and more involved in Margot's tumultuous life, reviving volatile memories that bring her face to face with her past. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Music Box Selects offer the option of DTS-HD Master tracks (24-bit) in
both 5.1 surround and 2.0 channel stereo - both the
original French (with some English) language. Sibyl
has no strong aggressive sequences of separation - but there is the
ocean (sailing), flashbacks with passionate sex but
Sibyl
is mostly dialogue-driven in terms of the soundstage. moments that come through with modest depth.
There is no credited score but there is some music; the traditional "Sometimes
I Feel Like a Motherless Child" performed beautifully by Julie
London, Nino Ferrer's "Un giorno come un altro" + "La rua
Madureira" and later Roy Orbison's "Sharadoba". Like the
video, it all sounds flawless in the lossless transfer. Music Box Selects offer optional English
subtitles (for the French) and English (SDH) on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Music Box Selects

Justine Triet's Sibyl
is an interesting modern film about memory and the process of
psychoanalysis. It shows some moral ambiguity as a curious subtext.
There are intriguing mirror'ed ellipses interspersed throughout. The
protagonist is drawn into the world of one of her patients while seeking
the dense realities of her own life. It's extremely well done. The Music Box Selects Blu-ray
