Directed by Val Guest
UK 1962

In this newly restored late Brit Noir classic, director Val Guest (The Day the Erath Caught Fire) whips up an absorbing and entertaining murder mystery based on the Hillary Waugh novel Sleep Long, My Love and inspired by the Brighton Trunk Murders of the 1930s. After discovering a woman’s body in a lonely beach house, a pair of Brighton detectives painstakingly assemble a jigsaw puzzle of clues as they attempt to track down her murderer.

***

A woman is found murdered in a house along the coast from Brighton. Local detectives Fellows and Wilks lead an investigation methodically following up leads and clues mostly in Brighton and Hove but also further afield.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Cohen Blu-ray (April 2022): Cohen have transferred Val Guest's Jigsaw to Blu-ray. Not to be confused with the 1949 independent Noir 'Jigsaw' reviewed on DVD HERE.

Cohen are doing more after the Brit Noir Double Feature Blu-rays of Dancing With Crime / The Green Cockatoo and Cast a Dark Shadow / Wanted For Murder. The 1080P image on Jigsaw is rather faint with occasionally fluctuating contrast and sporadic frame-specific marks (see samples below.) There is some minor, less noticeable, warping at the end of scenes and the overall visuals are relatively soft. It is a bump above SD but nothing remarkable on a single layered disc with a middling bitrate.

NOTE: We have added 50 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Cohen use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. Jigsaw is more about the nuts ands bolts of detection than the actual crime violence so it is fairly passive. There is no credited score but Jigsaw has some stock music occasionally played in the background. Dialogue is a bit scattered but audible in the lossless transfer. Cohen offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Cohen Blu-ray offers only a restored trailer as an extra. It warrants a commentary or featurette on the director.

Val Guest's Jigsaw is an excellent British police procedural. I really enjoyed it. It isn't a definitive noir but has some of the conventions. Performances carry a vérité feel although it is not a documentary-style exposition. The cinematographer is Arthur Grant - mainstay for many Hammer films including The Pirates of Blood River, The Damned, Quatermass and the Pit etc. The bare-bones Cohen Blu-ray has modest a/v and its biggest appeal is the film that is meticulously realized. Nice to see more Val Guest coming to 1080P.
