Directed by Sidney Franklin
USA 1926

In the gender-bender comedy "Beverly of Graustark" (1926), Marion Davies is an American co-ed whose cousin Oscar (Creighton Hale) is a Prince and heir to the throne of Graustark. In a twist of fate, she must switch places with him in order to prevent the conniving General Marlanax (Roy D'Arcy) from becoming King. Along the way, Beverly (as Oscar) meets goat-herd Dantan (Antonio Moreno), hires him as her bodyguard... and winds up falling for him. There are mistaken identities, intrigue, clothing swaps, a chase, a swordfight and more - and in the end Beverly winds up with the goat-herd, cousin Oscar becomes the new King, and there's a big fancy ball. •• Marking a stylistic shift from Marion Davies' earlier features, "Beverly of Graustark" - ably directed by Sidney Franklin - is more akin to her 1928 rom-coms "Show People" and "The Patsy" (both 1928).

Beverly Calhoun impersonates the Prince of Graustark to claim his birthright while he recovers from a skiing injury. In the meantime, she falls for her bodyguard Dantan.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Undercrank Productions Blu-ray (April 2022): Undercrank Productions have transferred Sidney Franklin's Beverly of Graustark (1926) is presented here in a new digital restoration by the film lab of the Library of Congress' National Audio Visual Conservation Center. The restoration was made from a 4K scan of a nitrate 35mm print in the Library's Marion Davies Collection, which contains the film's original 2-color Technicolor ending.". This is a BD-R but 1080P. It has it's share of speckles, marks and damage (see sample below) but we presume it is the best source in existence. It is still very watchable and the image carries heavy texture and decent contrast. The final 2-color Technicolor ending is, likewise , in rough shape. Overall, I am quite appreciative that this was brought to Blu-ray - even with the predictable limitations of the source. It's a large step over DVD/SD.

NOTE: We have added 52 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Undercrank Productions use lossy Dolby 2.0 channel track with a new musical score composed and performed on theatre organ by Ben Model. It sound wonderful accompanying the film. Undercrank Productions offer no subtitles - but it has the original inter-titles and their Blu-ray is Region FREE.

The Undercrank Productions Blu-ray offers no extras on this disc. It would have been nice to have a commentary - I think the film deserves it.

Sidney Franklin's Beverly of Graustark is  Silent Era fun. It's a thoroughly enjoyable romantic comedy starring Marion Davies in all her captivating glory playing the dual-role as Beverly Calhoun and impersonating the 'Prince'. She's fantastic. It was based on the novel by George Barr McCutcheon, and set in the fictional land of Graustark. Silent Era fans should be happy this is now available via Undercrank Production's 4K-scanned Blu-ray. They are a small company and we cut them some slack for their budget-conscious BD. Yes, the image is a reflection of its age (almost 100-years old!) but I was very thankful to see the rarely viewed Beverly of Graustark at all. For the right crowd this is worthwhile time spent in the home theatre.
