(aka "La venganza del sexo" or "The Curious Dr. Humpp" aka "The Curious Case of Dr. Humpp")

Directed by Emilio Vieyra / Jerald Intrator (new footage)
Argentina 1971

THE CURIOUS DR. HUMPP isn’t a movie - it’s a rite of passage. Easily one of the most brainbreaking sensory overloads in exploitation history, the story follows Dr. Humpp and his army of grotesque monsters as they kidnap couples and drain their “blood forces of sex” to keep the doctor eternally young. Directed by the prolific Emilio Vieyra in Argentina, this movie combines artful gothic horror with unhinged sex, comic book pulp, and a talking brain in a jar. Plus a monster who plays the guitar.

Basically, this is what might have happened if Mario Bava collaborated with Doris Wishman after an acid binge. AGFA + Something Weird are thrilled to present a brand-new restoration of this iconic sex-horror classic, complete with a new commentary track from filmmaker Frank Henenlotter (BASKET CASE).

***

This movie is about a doctor who kidnaps people, couples who are having sex. He takes them to his mansion where they are being kept as prisoners. He injects his subjects with a substance to 'enhance' their sexual abilities. The curious doctor then forces the abducted people to have sex. While they are making love he drains a fluid from them. He needs this to prevent himself from being transformed into a monster.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: 101 Films Blu-ray (July 2022): 101 Films have transferred Emilio Vieyr's The Curious Dr. Humpp to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Newly scanned & restored in 2k from its 35mm internegative". Also included is Vieyra’s original “horror” cut of The Curious Dr. Humpp entitled "La venganza del sexo" (4.5-minutes shorter) in its original Spanish language with English subtitles. While I don't own the AGFA US Blu-ray - I suspect it is the same as this 101 Films (UK) edition, although this appears to be Region 'B' where the AGFA one is Region FREE. The image is surprisingly strong with the source in solid shape with only a few scenes with moderate vertical scratches. It's in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. Contrast is pleasing and the 1080P has good detail. Hopefully the screen captures below will give you an idea.

On their Blu-ray, 101 Films use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) with an English language DUB. The Curious Dr. Humpp has meager effects and score by Víctor Buchino (The Naked Beast, Blood of the Virgins) although I don't know how much of his music is in this version with the US inserts. It can be quite eerie and quality is only a notch below the strong video sounding clean, if occasionally and authentically awkward, in the uncompressed transfer. 101 Films offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The 101 Films Blu-ray offers a commentary by Frank Henenlotter. It's the first commentary I have heard from him and I really enjoyed it. He discusses with impressive knowledge the 17-minutes of US inserts of sexploitation actresses, the old school vibrator - actually an 'Oster stim-u-lax' massager developed in 1939 and used by the "blonde nymphomaniac", he describes where the negatives came from (Something Weird), a lot on director Emilio Vieyra with personal anecdotes of meeting him and reasoning behind the title ("Curious") capitalizing on the Swedish film "I Am Curious Yellow" and it skirting censorship laws being labeled arthouse. He is a treasure trove of information on "La venganza del sexo", 42nd Street in New York City in the 1960s and 1970s and his involvement in the release slate of the specialty video releasing outfit Something Weird Video, many of the stars, including the sexploitation actor gals (Gloria Prat, Susana Beltrán, Mary Albano), some not credited and so much more. I was only disappointed that it runs 22-minutes short of the film's ending. Still a great addition to the Blu-ray package. Also included is the bonus feature; "La venganza del sexo" (Spanish for "revenge of sex") the shorter original version via a 2K restoration of a 35mm fine grain lab print, 22-minutes of "Brain damaged shorts and trailers from Dr. Humpp’s laboratory" which can tend to look like a Burlesque show at times - and there is reversible cover artwork.

Emilio Vieyra's The Curious Dr. Humpp is one of the oddest films that I can recall reviewing. It's often surreal with erotic fantasy sequences, extensive sexploitation scenes, but has surprisingly very pretty ladies. It is probably 'Latsploitation' embracing the Argentine ‘sexploitation’ genre. The image is well above what I anticipated and there is semblance of a science-fiction plot interspersed with titillating adult content. It's pretty cool in its own very weird, subversive and hippie way. The 101 Films Blu-ray appears consistent with the AGFA BD already released HERE. You may wish to pick this up for its uniqueness and unabashed expression plus it has the original version and excellent commentary. A very odd film that we, equally oddly, recommend!
