Directed by Melville Shavelson
USA 1958
This wonderful romantic comedy has the legendary Cary Grant (North by Northwest, Charade) as a government attorney who can’t seem to shake his bad fortune. Living on a houseboat, widowed and left with three unruly kids, he hires Sophia Loren (Arabesque) as a governess. The magnetic Loren and the charming Grant become the screen’s most exciting team and make this Houseboat a cheeky, urbane comedy delight! Co-starring Martha Hyer (Battle Hymn), Murray Hamilton (Jaws) and Harry Guardino (Madigan), this warmly entertaining Technicolor/VistaVision production was nominated for 2 Academy Awards for the year 1958: Best Original Screenplay (Melville Shavelson and Jack Rose) and Best Song (Almost in Your Arms by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans; sung by soul legend Sam Cooke). Directed by Shavelson (The Five Pennies). *** Cary Grant and Sophia Loren look just swell together in Houseboat, and why shouldn't they? Grant was still at his best, Loren was bewitching Hollywood as an exotic new ingénue, and offscreen they had had a torrid affair a couple of years earlier, during the shooting of The Pride and the Passion. The two tanned stars are the main attraction in this romantic comedy, which installs single dad Cary and his three children on a dilapidated houseboat on the Potomac River. Sophia is the maid, except she's not really a maid but the cultured daughter of a famous musician... Excerpt from Robert Horton at Amazon located HERE |

On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the
original English language. Houseboat
has only one aggressive effect with a train... The score was by

Houseboat is notable for also having music like Sam Cooke's
Almost in Your Arms ( as the Love Song from Houseboat),
Sophia Loren performing Bing! Bang! Bong! and Almost in Your
Arms, Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 in A-Major op. 90 and
Harry Warren's That's Amore. The audio is clean and fairly
unremarkable in the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino

Melville Shavelson's Houseboat
is straightforward stuff - no hidden context, but is has two of the most
visually appealing movie stars of their era; debonair Cary Grant and
camera-magnet Sophia Loren - both draped in jaw-dropping Edith
Head garb. They are also fresh off an off-screen love affair. Like many
films, Houseboat
has positives and negatives but does the marquee make it worth a
viewing? I'd say - absolutely. An estranged, ill-equipped father, with
Grant's trademark double-takes, meets, Nanny/maid (not-really) babe-lonia
Sophia Loren and the sparks fly with plenty of, damaged, kiddie-involvement
to circumvent. Yeah, it's family-level cute with a certain degree of
irresistibility. The Kino Blu-ray
