(aka 'The Gay Girls')

directed by Richard Quine
USA 1955

Yet another adaptation of Ruth McKenney’s timeless autobiographical stories about two lively Ohio girls trying to make their way in New York City, this musical version of My Sister Eileen (1955) stars Betty Garrett as brainy writer Ruth and Janet Leigh as beautiful actress Eileen. Among their suitors are a randy publisher (Jack Lemmon) and a sympathetic soda jerk (Bob Fosse, who also provides the sensational choreography). Songs are from Jule Styne and Leo Robin; the script is by Blake Edwards and Richard Quine directs.

***

This is one of the most entertaining musicals to ever come out of Hollywood. Light and witty, sweet and subtle, it's almost as if Lubitsch made it. The songs are a joy, the dancing a treat and the story deliciously simple. Janet Leigh and Jack Lemmon shine, but the true star is the glorious Betty Garret, who should have been much bigger than she was. Please check this out, it's a charmer !.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Twilight Time have transferred the delightful, musical-comedy-romance My Sister Eileen to 1080P Blu-ray. It clocks in at a delightfully wide 2.55:1 showing some Cinemascope mumps and colors take a vibrant leap forward in the higher resolution. It dramatically tightens as compared to SD and there is more information in the frame - notable on the side edges. The HD is on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate and looks splendid in-motion.

My Sister Eileen had theatrical showings with a 4-Track Stereo experience and Twilight Time give the option of a 4.1 surround and 2.0 channel stereo - both with a 24-bit DTS-HD master rendering. Some of the musical numbers include As Soon As They See Eileen performed by Betty Garrett, I'm Great by Betty Garrett, Janet Leigh, Kurt Kasznar and Dick York and note the Competition Dance sequence with Bob Fosse and Tommy Rall, plus It's Bigger Than You And Me performed by Jack Lemmon and other pieces. The score was composed by George Duning (Two Rode Together, The Eddy Duchin Story, 3:10 to Yuma, Jeanne Eagels, The Shadow on the Window, Tight Spot, etc.) and sounds wonderfully orchestrated, lively and fun via the lossless and the option of an isolated music track with some dialogue and effects. There are optional English subtitles - in a shouting, capitals, font (see sample below)

Only a trailer (beyond the isolated score option).

Great film - and a top musical for lovers of the genre. It looks and sounds great on the Blu-ray. Certainly endorsed!

ON THE DVD: This image has some softness to it. Colors are a little washed, but stand out nicely against the non-manipulated contrast levels. Amazing to see the 2.49 widescreen and the lovely Janet Leigh. Good film, but a relatively weak presentation from Columbia. The movie-tone style extras are an odd extra and the audio is 4.0? This disc is okay if you can get it cheap, and don't expect too much.  out of
