Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: 101 Films Blu-ray (May 2022): 101 Films have transferred Jonathan Demme's first directorial effort Caged Heat to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "2K scan from the Original Camera Negative". It's on a single-layered transfer but the 1-hour 20-minute film has a max'ed out bitrate. It looks fine - only a few blemishes and certain sequences are strong with pleasing detail and depth - the inconsistencies are more a product of the budgetary limitations. It looks quite decant and acceptable in 1080P.

NOTE: We have added 64 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, 101 Films use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. Caged Heat has few aggressive (initial and later gunfire) moments that come through with modest depth and score by John Cale (Something Wild), sounding clean with consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. 101 Films offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The 101 Films Blu-ray offers a commentary by Jonathan Demme, DoP Tak Fujimoto and actress Erica Gavin. Demme does most of the talking and there are discussions on homages to John Cromwell's 1950 Caged or Sam Fuller, how the script had to have action, sex, violence humor and a minor social statement, Erica considers Caged Heat an art film, they talk about the many dream sequences, Corman's input, giving them freedom etc. It's a good commentary. There is also a 5-minute Leonard Maltin interview with Roger Corman, a theatrical trailer and a stills gallery.

Jonathan Demme's Caged Heat is an essential part of the 'Woman in Prison' genre that blossomed to new levels of exploitation and sexploitation in the 70s. The director shows some of his future leanings and style. The commentary has value and there is some female empowerment in Caged Heat.  For those who missed the Shout! Factory this 101 Films Blu-ray is a good package and deserves a spot on the shelf for lovers of this genre that crosses over from the broader classification of Grindhouse. Any reason to see Barbara Steele in 1080P is usually a must-own. Enjoy!
