Directed by Don Siegel
USA 1959

Cornel Wilde (Shockproof), Victoria Shaw (The Crimson Kimono), and Mickey Shaughnessy (Jailhouse Rock) star in Edge of Eternity, a riveting murder mystery from director Don Siegel (Madigan, Charley Varrick).

When a series of killings plagues an Arizona ghost town on the edge of the Grand Canyon, Deputy Sherrif Martin (Wilde) forms an unlikely partnership with playgirl Janice (Shaw) to investigate.

Made on location, and shot in CinemaScope by the great Burnett Guffey (The Sniper, The Reckless Moment), Edge of Eternity is one of Don Siegel's most arresting and thrilling crime films.

***

Thrillingly shot in Cinemascope in and around the Grand Canyon, director Don Siegel’s actioner Edge of Eternity (1959) stars Cornel Wilde as a hard-jawed deputy with a past, suddenly dealing with a plague of murders. There’s mystery, there’s romance (Victoria Shaw is the tough, attractive woman with whom Wilde teams), and above all there are thrills, including a climax shot by legendary cinematographer Burnett Guffey to rival any cliffhanger ever put on screen.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Indicator Blu-ray (January 2025): Indicator have transferred Don Siegel's Edge of Eternity to Blu-ray. In February 2017 we reviewed the, now out-of-print, Twilight Time Blu-ray of Edge of Eternity, HERE. The image quality is very similar with a slight uptick in color depth for the UK transfer. The Grand Canyon scenery and the film's exuberant colors are the big star of the visuals. The 1080P presentation is bright and impressive with some pleasing texture notable. It looks quite consistent in-motion with no damage or speckles. I see no evidence of manipulation or noise and there is plenty of depth.

On their Blu-ray, Indicator use a linear PCM mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. Edge of Eternity has bass-required effects and they comes across with depth and drama. Pleasing. The score was by Daniele Amfitheatrof (The Damned Don't Cry, Human Desire, The Capture, An Act of Murder, The Last Hunt, I'll Be Seeing You, Time Out of Mind, The Lost Moment, The Desperate Hours, Undercover Girl, Letter From An Unknown Woman) supporting the atmosphere effectively. Indicator offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Indicator Blu-ray offers a new commentary by professor and film scholar Jason A. Ney. He talks about Film noir connections, the Don Siegel supporting cast regulars who are in the film, the CinemaScope, the performances, the score, commercial uses of bat guano, Cornel Wilde's detached retina and much more. It is excellent - I always enjoy Jason's insights and observations especially as they relate to the 'dark cinema'.  There are three new video supplements; Into the Canyon runs over a 1/43 hour and has writer and academic José Arroyo discussing Edge of Eternity in the context of Don Siegel’s career. He is then in a second 1/2 hour featurette entitled Closer to the Edge where he does a deeper dive into the film. An Australian Cinderella is also new and runs 16-minutes with academic Stephen Morgan discussing the life and career of Australian actor and Columbia contract player Victoria Shaw. Lastly is an original theatrical trailer and an image gallery of promotional and publicity material - plus the package has a limited edition exclusive 36-page booklet with a new essay by Peter Cowie (God and the Devil: The Life and Work of Ingmar Bergman,) an archival piece on the making of the film by producer Kendrick Sweet (The Thing, Christine, The Dead Zone), an extract from Don Siegel’s autobiography, and film credits.

Don Siegel's Edge of Eternity doesn't really fulfill all its promise in terms of being a thriller. But there is plenty to like about it including the stunning CinemaScope appearance, Siegel's adept storytelling, the characters - sheriff with a troubled past, the advancing Gold-related mystery, the small-town, and a cable car suspended above the Grand Canyon. The Indicator Blu-ray is a great package of a impressive looking and watchable 1959 film - no masterpiece, but entertaining, nostalgic, cool and recommended!
