(aka "John Carpenter's Christine" )

directed by John Carpenter
USA 1983

She was born in Detroit on an automobile assembly line. But she is no ordinary automobile. Deep within her chassis lives an unholy presence. She is a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury named CHRISTINE, whose unique standard equipment includes an evil, indestructible vengeance that will destroy anyone in her way. She seduces 17-year-old Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) who becomes consumed with passion for her sleek rounded chrome-laden body. She demands his complete and unquestioned devotion and when outsiders seek to interfere, they become the victims of Christine's horrifying wrath. John Carpenter brings Stephen King's best selling novel to life in this chilling thriller.

Better than you standard fare for this genre (teen occult?) and the commonplace North American obsession with automobiles drives the plot. well acted and genuinely scary - a kind of Halloween-ish pop-corn flic. out of

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Indicator - Region FREE - Blu-ray (October 2016): The Twilight Time is out-of-print, the new Indicator (Powerhouse Films) out of the UK is the next best Blu-ray package. It's slightly more technically robust in the video transfer but I can only see some shifted pixels - nothing extravagant. If forced to state the best in motion - it would probably be the Indicator. It has the depth and crispness of the other Blu-rays. It could only be better in a 4K restoration.

Indicator goes linear PCM for the stereo and DTS-HD Master for the 5.1 surround (more robust than the Sonys but a notch below the Twilight Time.) Overall it still sounds great - Thorogood's Bad To The Bone, The Stones' Beast Of Burden, vintage stuff like Bony Moronie, Dion's I Wonder Why, Del Shannon's Runaway performed by Bonnie Raitt - delightful. New subtitles (English SDH) and I can confirm that it is indeed region FREE.

More or less, the exact same extras - the commentary (the Sony adds optional subtitles for the commentary - this doesn't), featurettes and deleted scenes are here, Trailer and TV Spots, included is the isolated score (as found on the Twilight Time but in LPCM) and have some new liner notes (new Essay by Jeff Billington, 'Guilty Pleasures' by carpenter from 1996 and many color photos!). The Indicator is Dual-Format and includes a second disc DVD!

New menus - looks like a sweet package for UK residents. It's a notch above the Sony editions in a/v. The fans have high hopes for this new Blu-ray label and this is a very positive sign. It is limited to 5,000 copies. Thumbs up!

ADDITION: Sony (US) - Region FREE Blu-ray  (September 2015): The US Blu-ray Release in September 2015 is the EXACT same disc as the German Blu-ray already reviewed. Same bitrate, extras, menus - everything. The US Sony edition does have a leaflet with a code for a digital copy.

***

ADDITION: Sony - Region FREE - Blu-ray (August 2014): Similar to Fright Night - Christine is a waaay out-of-print, limited edition, Twilight Time Blu-ray release fetching extraordinary high prices in auctions. Like Fright Night this has been released as a Region FREE Blu-ray Sony release - out of Germany - and should send a monkey-wrench into those exorbitant prices. It is not quite as robust as the US edition but it looks about the same to my eyes. It is 1080P on a dual-layered disc, colors are bright and there may be a minor difference in how the grain is exported and it may have a tinge more artifacts - but overall - it is, more or less, the same, IMO.

Also DTS-HD Master, surround, but less robust and a tad less depth. Christine has a lot of aggression - and a notable score by Carpenter and Howarth. Again, like the video, I may give a slight nod to the Twilight Time - but I suggest that most won't notice. The Sony does have multiple DUB and subtitle options but like the Twilight Time this Blu-ray is also region FREE playable worldwide.

More or less, the exact same extras - the commentary (the Sony adds optional subtitles for the commentary) and featurettes are here, we lose the isolated score and liner notes.

This is the ideal option for those that missed the Twilight Time Blu-ray edition. Even the menus are in English. Still a well-crafted horror from an inventive Stephen King novel. Certainly recommended for, translated to, $15 US!

ADDITION: Twilight Time - Region FREE - Blu-ray (March 2013): Since this is already out-of-print (3000 copies limited - in a couple of weeks) I won't take up too much time. Twilight Time's package is great - the 1080P image quality shows immense improvement - especially via the colors with Christine's reds looking far richer and deeper. Contrast also takes a large leap forward. The visuals are thick and detail is never pristinely crisp but this is how the film originally looked. The audio is lossless, with optional subtitles and  the soundtrack is offered as an isolated score, on the region FREE Blu-ray disc. Supplements include the commentary, deleted scenes and video featurettes. Fans of the film have spoken but many others who want will have to pay through the nose.

***

ON THE DVDs: The new Region 1 (and 4) disc looks pretty good. I'm sure we'll be adding the old NTSC version soon to this comparison. Solid extras on the new edition with a commentary and 20 deleted scenes. Good contrast and sharp - I can't tell if its edge enhancement I see, but if its there - its not overwhelming. I hate those yellow subtitles and there are a ton of options on the PAL DVD, but for the obvious we are going with the new SE. Halloween is coming !
