Directed by Bong Joon Ho
South
Korea / United States 2017
Master genre exploder Bong Joon Ho swirls pathos, dark satire, action, and horror into an exhilarating twenty-first-century fairy tale. An all-star cast including Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, and Jake Gyllenhaal is led by An Seo Hyun as Mija, a South Korean girl growing up on an Edenic mountainside with her grandfather and best friend: Okja, a giant, empathetic “superpig” created as part of a secret GMO experiment. When Okja is abruptly torn away from her, Mija embarks on a perilous rescue mission that places her at the center of a sinister corporate conspiracy. While Bong’s trademark virtuosic set pieces dazzle, Okja’s beating heart is the connection between a girl and her superpig, made all the more poignant by the brilliant special effects that bring the animal star to unforgettable life. *** A young girl named Mija risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend - a massive animal named Okja. |

Criterion use a Dolby Atmos track on both
the Blu-ray
and
4K UHD discs. It's a 7.1 track (24-bit) in the
original English, Korean and Spanish languages. For Atmos many
non-compliant systems will recognizes it as TrueHD 7.1, but from
Wikipedia: "Because of limited bandwidth and lack of processing
power, Atmos in home theaters is not a real-time mix rendered the same
way as in cinemas. The substream is added to Dolby TrueHD or Dolby
Digital Plus. This substream only represents a losslessly encoded fully
object-based mix. This substream does not include all 128 objects
separated. This is not a matrix-encoded channel, but a spatially-encoded
digital channel. Atmos in home theaters can support 24.1.10 channel, but
it is not an object-based real-time rendering. Filmmakers need to remix
and render the TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus soundtracks with Dolby
Media Producer." Okja
has a deeply immersive soundstage from barely audible subtleties to rich
deep-bass intensity and adroit separations. Sounds are coming from all
over the place - strongly impacting the brilliant visual presentation.
The varied score is credited to
Jaeil Jung (Parasite.)
Other music in Okja includes Harvest For The World
performed by The Isley Brothers, Osvaldo Pugliese's A Evaristo
Carriego, John Denver's Annie's Song, Sweeney's Cavalcade
performed by The United States Air Force Band and J.S. Bach's
Präludium Nr. 12 F-Moll, BWV 881, The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II
performed by Roger Woodward - all sounding amazing in the Atmos. Criterion offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A' / 'B'
Blu-ray,
as well as their
4K UHD
disc which is Region FREE.
The
4K UHD has no supplements. They are all
on Criterion's
second disc
Blu-ray.

Seyeon and Catherine George. Also a 16-minute program with

Okja's marketing campaign, are some Web videos by the creative agency
Ralph that were made to represent the film's Mirando Corporation, its
marketing of the "superpig" to consumers, and an attack on it by the
Animal Liberation Front (Superpig Info Graphic - 0:51, Mirando
Infomercial - 1:28, Deserves Less Spot - 0:32, Accolades
Spot - 0:42, My Okja - 0:55, Mirando is Murder -
1:05). There is also a short 2017 program about Okja's special
effects includes director Bong Joon Ho, visual-effects supervisor
Erik-Jan de Boer, and animation supervisor Stephen Clee, among others.
From 2017 is snippets of actors An Seo Hyun, Paul Dano, Jake Gyllenhaal,
Tilda Swinton, and Steven Yuen, among others, discussing the main
character of Okja. Lastly are a teaser and trailer plus the package has
a liner notes essay by critic Karen Han.
Bong Joon Ho's Okja
is such a genre mix with elements of a family film, over-the-top comedy,
a moral treatise on vegetarianism and animal cruelty, a political
parable, a subtle creature-feature homage (not really), a fascinating
science-fiction, a condemnation of corporatism, an apocalyptic hi-tech
warning of genetically modified corruption in the food industry.... and
more.
It was originally released on Netflix on June 28th, 2017. There is a a
post-credits scene with Paul Dano (Jay) - be sure not to miss it. Okja
is such immense eye-candy - and Criterion haven't missed anything in
their a/v and supplements. A bizarre and visually beautiful Bong Joon Ho
film - fun, heart-warming, humorous and more. Don't miss it.
