Directed by William Dieterle
USA 1951

Stained by the Blood of the West’s Greatest Heroes! From William Dieterle, the acclaimed director of Portrait of Jennie, Rope of Sand and Dark City, comes a rip-roaring Technicolor western with the all-star lineup of Alan Ladd (Shane), Lizabeth Scott (Desert Fury), Arthur Kennedy (Bend of the River) and John Ireland (Gunfight at the O.K. Corral). In the waning days of the Civil War, a rebel captain (Ladd) flees to Colorado to join a band of Southern mercenaries led by the bloodthirsty General Quantrill (Ireland). Along the way he drags an innocent gold-prospecting couple (Kennedy and Scott) into danger when the husband is accused of murder. Packed with fast-paced cavalry action, thrilling shootouts, a rousing Franz Waxman (Botany Bay) score and colorful Charles Lang (The Magnificent Seven) cinematography, Red Mountain is a glittering gem of a western!

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (September 2024): Kino have transferred William Dieterle's Red Mountain to Blu-ray. It was shot in Technicolor and looks quite appealing in 1080P: The darker scenes are quite dark and the vibrancy of the colors don't shine through as some might hope., Still I thought it looks quite pleasing on my system. The 'tone' is darker and I like it.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. Red Mountain has many western-genre aggressive effects from rifle and gunfire to galloping horses. There is some resounding depth here. The score is by Franz Waxman (Botany Bay, I, The Jury, Bride of Frankenstein Untamed, Rebecca, Dark Passage, Rear Window, Sunset Boulevard etc.) and it supports the film with a heavy dramatic tone. Kino offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by film historian Samm Deighan (The Legacy of World War II in European Arthouse Cinema.) She sees the film beyond the context of a western and Civil War film and discusses it as a post-WW 2 film. She sees it as saying a lot of about the US society is the 40s and 50s rather than the US in 1865. She talks about the stars and their careers; Ladd, Scott, Arthur Kennedy and John Ireland (their connection to genre film and Noir) as well as themes including gold mining and assaying. It's very well-researched. There are also 8 trailers of Ladd, Scott and other films but none for Red Mountain.

William Dieterle's Red Mountain has Noir mainstays Alan Ladd (This Gun For Hire, The Blue Dahlia, The Glass Key) and Lizabeth Scott (The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Dead Reckoning, Desert Fury, and Too Late for Tears). I have to say that, while I love Mr. Ladd, Miss Scott more strongly advanced my interest in the film. Her character of, conflicted, 'Chris' is... captivating. Arthur Kennedy (High Sierra) is also excellent. Of course, William Dieterle (All That Money Can Buy, The Accused, Love Letters) is a highly competent craftsman. Red Mountain is an enjoyable western. Ladd, Scott and vintage western genre fans will appreciate this Kino Blu-ray which, with commentary, we endorse.
