Directed by Rod Holcomb
USA 1991

Chains of Gold is a hard-hitting story of a teen who has made a big mistake, and the one man willing to risk everything to keep that mistake from being fatal. Social worker Scott Barnes (John Travolta, Pulp Fiction) befriends 13-year-old Tommy Burke (Joey Lawrence, TV's Blossom), who's involved with a crack-dealing gang. He is desperate to quit, but the gang has other ideas...they kill anyone who tries to leave. When the police offer no help, Scott launches a desperate attempt to rescue the boy. With the help of his ex-girlfriend (Marilu Henner, Perfect), he infiltrates the inner circle of the gang, putting his life on the line to get Tommy out.

***

Scott Barnes is an alcoholic turned social worker hellbent on saving a young boy named Tommy from self-destructing when he finds out he has begun selling crack in an organization called YIP, run by Carlos.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (September 2024): Kino have transferred Rod Holcomb's Chains of Gold to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. It looks okay in 1080P similar to late 80's less-resilient film stock where grain in darker sequences can appear noisy. The image is fairly flat and unremarkable but a fair replication, I would guess, to its production roots.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. Chains of Gold has aggression moments from guns to snapping alligators to beatings from 'Carlos' (Benjamin Bratt.) It's a bit more bark than bite but there is modest bass exported. The score was by Trevor Jones (varied compositions include the films like Runaway Train, In the Name of the Father, Angel Heart and Arachnophobia). It adds some drama via the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers only a trailer for Chains of Gold as well as other Travolta films; Moment by Moment, Staying Alive, The Experts, Face/Off and Sunnyside (which would be Joey Travolta.)

Rod Holcomb's Chains of Gold's greatest attribute may be the lead, John Travolta. I continue to be fascinated by his acting and dancing ability, set-backs, resurgence, piloting (he is rated to fly Boeing 707, 737, and 747 planes - he owns four aircraft,) Scientology adoption, and more. Some people are just absurdly photogenic. Nice to see bit parts by Bernie Casey (Felix Leiter in Never Say Never Again,) Hector Elizondo (American Gigolo and the first The Taking of Pelham One Two Three - not the second, 2009, one with Travolta) and what about Marilu Henner (Taxi)? - did you know she was featured on an episode of 60 Minutes for her exceptional memory (aka 'hyperthymestic syndrome'.) She can remember almost every day of her life since she was 11 years old. These actors add modestly to the film which is, still, kind of a dud. The Kino Blu-ray is only recommended to Travolta fans.
