Directed by John Frankenheimer
USA 1979

Robert Foxworth and Talia Shire star as a doctor and his wife who travel to Maine to research the impact of the lumber industry on the local environment. They begin to investigate a succession of mysterious and terrifying events: ecological freaks of nature and a series of bizarre and grisly human deaths. Something unimaginably horrible waits in the woods. Something unwittingly created by man, that will become an uncontrollable, merciless machine of destruction.

A graphically violent piece of environmental horror from director John Frankenheimer, Prophecy comes to Blu-ray for the first time ever in the UK.

***

When a dispute occurs between a logging operation and a nearby Native American tribe, Dr. Robert Verne and his wife, Maggie, are sent in to mediate. Chief John Hawks insists the loggers are poisoning the water supply, and, though company man Isley denies it, the Vernes can't ignore the strangely mutated wildlife roaming the woods. Robert captures a bear cub for testing and soon finds himself the target of an angry mutant grizzly.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Eureka Blu-ray (August 2021): Eureka have transferred John Frankenheimer's Prophecy to Blu-ray. Even being on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate the image quality is middling. It is fairly consistent but not especially crisp with what is probably an inherent softness. It has a tendency to look a bit waxy but colors are vibrant and there is some depth in the 2.35:1 frame.

NOTE: We have added 50 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Eureka use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. Prophecy has a number aggressive moments from the paper mill to the creature attacks and they carry impacting depth. The score is by Leonard Rosenman (Rebel Without a Cause, The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond, Fantastic Voyage, Countdown, Hide in Plain Sight and A Man Called Horse) adding to the rising tension and confrontations with the beast. Eureka offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Eureka Blu-ray offers two new commentaries. The first is by Richard Harland Smith. I like Richard... a lot and this is another excellent commentary by him. He always helps my appreciation of a film - he provides comparative/related films and makes analysis. The second commentary is by Lee Gambin and Emma Westwood. Emma is the author of The Fly (Devils Advocates.) Lee is author of Massacred By Mother Nature: Exploring the Natural Horror Film and they discuss Prophecy as an "environmental horror" and talk about the indigenous people and how they are represented in the film. There are also new interviews with screenwriter David Seltzer and mime artist Tom McLoughlin plus an original theatrical trailer, radio spots and stills galleries. The package includes a collector’s booklet featuring new writing by Craig Ian Mann; and an archival interview as well as sporting a limited edition O-Card slipcase featuring new artwork by Darren Wheeling.

John Frankenheimer's Prophecy is... a mess. It has a great premise with a renowned director - it's hard to know where it fell apart. Richard Harland Smith's commentary added a bit to my 'creature feature' admiration but Prophecy is a difficult recommendation for the film. Eureka has done their Blu-ray to the nines with a max'ed out bitrate, two new commentaries and two new interviews plus the booklet. Recommended to forgiving horror fans or Frankenheimer-completists.
