Directed by Ralph Thomas
UK 1971

The story of a very successful transplant! After a freak accident dismembers Edwin Anthony’s (Hywel Bennett, Endless Night, Twisted Nerve) member, master surgeon Sir Emmanuel Whitbread (Denholm Elliott, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Trading Places) successfully performs the world’s first penis transplant which Edwin names “Percy”. But when Edwin begins to experience identity problems, he decides to investigate the life and loves of "Percy's" former owner. Can a sincere young man find love among the world's most beautiful women when guided by an organ with a mind of its own? Screen goddesses Britt Ekland (The Wicker Man, The Man with the Golden Gun) and Elke Sommer (A Shot in the Dark, The Oscar) co-star in this 1971 British cult comedy directed by Ralph Thomas (The High Commissioner, Deadlier Than the Male), that also features a rocking soundtrack of original songs written by Ray Davies and performed by The Kinks, including the hit "God's Children."

***

Edwin Antony (Hywel Bennett) is emasculated in an accident which kills a young philanderer. Doctors successfully replace his member with that of the dead man, but refuse to tell him the full story of the organ's origin. So Edwin begins a search which takes him to the philanderer's wife - and also to his many, many girlfriends...

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Code Red Blu-ray (August 2021): Code Red have transferred Ralph Thomas's Percy to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 4K Restoration from the Original Camera Negative". With some minor inconsistencies the image quality is quite pleasing. It's on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. Detail seems to improve as the film runs, colors seem true and unembellished and there is both depth and texture. No complaints.

On their Blu-ray, Code Red use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. Percy has very few aggressive moments and a score credited to The Kinks' Ray Davies (The Virgin Soldier), with songs like God's Children, Lola, Whip Lady etc. sounding clean with consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. Code Red offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray.

The Code Red Blu-ray offers only a handful of trailers as a supplement - none for the film.

Ralph Thomas's Percy is cute, sexy, humor - somewhat dated but it did spawn a sequel; Percy's Progress with much of the same cast and helmed again by Thomas - it is also on Blu-ray. There are some sly sequences making social commentary (ex. the girl just wanting sex and our protagonist wanting to get to know her better instead.) Hywel Bennett does have amusing support with Denholm Elliott and plenty of comely lasses like Elke Sommer, Britt Ekland, Cyd Hayman, Antonia Ellis, Tracy Reed and others. Percy's key writer is the uncredited Michael Palin and soccer fans can keep their eyes peeled for Georgie Best! The Code Red, bare-bones, Blu-ray takes this 50-year old wry take on the morals of the era and gives it a solid a/v upgrade from DVD. There is some nostalgia here for a few - it's fairly classy with mostly cheesecake nudity. To fans of the participants (which can include the music of The Kinks, Britt, Bestie et all) this is recommended!
