ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): An easy 'Top Pick' this week - Krzysztof Kieślowski Three Colors Trilogy - Blue, White and Red via Criterion will be my front-running choice for Blu-ray package of the Year. "The films are named for the colors of the French flag and stand for the tenets of the French Revolution—liberty, equality, and fraternity—but that hardly begins to explain their enigmatic beauty and rich humanity." Lynch's Blue Velvet greatly benefits from the move to 1080P and fans will revel at the opportunity to indulge in new extras features. An amazing deal.Jean Renoir’s 'supreme masterpiece' The Rules of the Game is deservedly given the Blu-ray treatment and the result is an appealing rich, grain-soaked, film-like, image. The original Cape Fear (1962) also goes 'Blu' with an imperfect transfer - but certainly bests the previous DVDs. Speaking of the lesser format - western fans will want to indulge in King Vidor's Man Without a Star with Kirk Douglas and Jeanne Crain. Gregory diligently covers the vintage cinema of SD including the great Eric von Stroheim in The Mask of Diijon, demobbed doughboy John Payne as The Boss, Noirish Key Witness and No Escape, suggestively-titled The Killer is Loose and The Night Holds Terror and the pleasant pairing of Cosby + Culp in Hickey and Boggs. Eric looks at the new NY'er's Nine Nation Animation as well as his usual penchant for edgy cinema with a revealing comparison of Tokyo Decadence plus the horror's Deadly Blessing and House on the Edge of the Park. Have a fabulous week and visit us soon as we hope to finish our Blu-ray reviews Touch of Evil and Fanny and Alexander!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Man Without a Star - Singing cowboy Kirk Douglas takes over Jeanne Crain's ranch in one of the more sexually askew films of King Vidor's postwar period. A mad film, of harsh Technicolor and spatially impossible camera angles, and a fine example of the unlimited leeway afforded by the western genre. DVD Release Date: October 14th, 2011

Three Colors: Red BD - Krzysztof Kieślowski closes his Three Colors trilogy in grand fashion, with an incandescent meditation on fate and chance, starring Irène Jacob as a sweet-souled yet somber runway model in Geneva whose life dramatically intersects with that of a bitter retired judge, played by Jean‑Louis Trintignant. Meanwhile, just down the street, a seemingly unrelated story of jealousy and betrayal unfolds. Red is an intimate look at forged connections and a splendid final statement from a remarkable filmmaker at the height of his powers. Blu-ray Boxset Release Date: November 15th, 2011

Nine Nation Animation - The World According to Shorts' NINE NATION ANIMATION festival features a generally impressive, disturbing, hilarious, and affecting roster of features from around the globe. In Norway's "Deconstruction Workers," two construction workers come to the realization that alienation is the norm as the world around them self-destructs. In Turkey's "Average 40 Matches," a box of matches sacrifices the odd one out in order to take a drag of a cigarette (which ultimately consumes them all)... DVD Release Date: October 25th, 2011

Blue Velvet BD - Jeffrey (MacLachlan) is the contemporary knight in slightly tarnished armour, a shy and adolescent inhabitant of Lumberton, USA. After discovering a severed ear in an overgrown backlot, he embarks upon an investigation that leads him into a hellish netherworld, where he observes - and comes to participate in - a terrifying sado-masochistic relationship between damsel-in-distress Dorothy (Rossellini) and mad mobster Frank Booth (Hopper). Grafting on to this story his own idiosyncratic preoccupations, Lynch creates a visually stunning, convincingly coherent portrait of a nightmarish substratum to conventional, respectable society. Blu-ray Release Date: November 8th, 2011

Three Colors: White BD - The most playful and also the grittiest of Kieślowski’s Three Colors films follows the adventures of Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski), a Polish immigrant living in France. The hapless hairdresser opts to leave Paris for his native Warsaw when his wife (Julie Delpy) sues him for divorce (her reason: their marriage was never consummated) and then frames him for arson after setting her own salon ablaze. White, which goes on to chronicle Karol Karol’s elaborate revenge plot, manages to be both a ticklish dark comedy about the economic inequalities of Eastern and Western Europe and a sublime reverie about twisted love. Blu-ray Boxset Release Date: November 15th, 2011

The Rules of the Game BD - Virtually everyone agrees that this is Jean Renoir’s supreme masterpiece, made and released the same year as Only Angels Have Wings and even more of a virtuoso ensemble work. Yet this was so adroit in catching the troubled zeitgeist of France at the time that it was loathed by audiences at the time of its release, making it the biggest flop of Renoir’s career. Only many years later, after it was painstakingly restored and reconstructed, was its greatness seen and acknowledged. Mostly set in a country chateau over a single weekend, where the crisscrossing romantic intrigues of both guests and servants play out in intricate counterpoint, culminating in a costume party, Renoir joins the proceedings as a major actor and character as well as writer-director, attempting to serve as go-between between two of his most intimate friends, the wife (Nora Grégor) of the Jewish marquis (Marcel Dalio) who’s hosting the weekend and the lovesick but rejected famous pilot (Roland Toutain) who wants to run away with her. As a view of French society in 1939, this tragicomic farce is both scathingly satirical and warmly compassionate, though it was plainly only the scathing satire that most members of the contemporary audience responded to. Blu-ray Release Date: November 15th, 2011

Cape Fear (1962) BD - An irredeemable criminal exacts his revenge on the family of a lawyer who put him away. This supremely nasty thriller - originally severely cut by the British censor - boasts great credentials: a source in John D MacDonald's novel The Executioners, Mitchum as the sadistic villain (a bare-chested variant on his Night of the Hunter role), Peck as the epitome of threatened righteousness, seedy locations in the Southern bayous, and whooping music by Bernard Herrmann. If director Thompson isn't quite skilful enough to give the film its final touch of class (many of the shocks are just too planned), the relentlessness of the story and Mitchum's tangibly sordid presence guarantee the viewer's quivering attention. Blu-ray Release Date: October 10th, 2011

House on the Edge of the Park - House on the Edge of the Park' is set in the back end of the disco years of the seventies where street wise garage mechanic and erstwhile rapist Alex gatecrashes at a decadent suburban party. Once there, Alex amuses himself by tormenting and raping the guests... in a machismo exhibition that Hess can do only too well. DVD Release Date: October 31st 2011

Three Colors: Blue BD - In the devastating first film of the Three Colors trilogy, Juliette Binoche gives a tour de force performance as Julie, a woman reeling from the tragic death of her husband and young daughter. But Blue is more than just a blistering study of grief; it’s also a tale of liberation, as Julie attempts to free herself from the past while confronting truths about the life of her late husband, a composer. Shot in sapphire tones by Sławomir Idziak, and set to an extraordinary operatic score by Zbigniew Preisner, Blue is an overwhelming sensory experience. Blu-ray Boxset Release Date: November 15th, 2011

Tokyo Decadence - From the writer of Takashi Miike's Audition - Ry Murakami - comes a journey into a dimly lit world of submission, obedience and restraint. Ai is a college girl who works on the decadent fringes of Tokyo s S&M scene, servicing the needs of rich men who want to dominate and be dominated. Working in an empty world of other peoples seedy desires, she longs for the love of an artist who has rejected her. Can she escape from the world of dangerous fantasies and risky sex she finds herself in and make her romantic delusions a reality? DVD Release Date: October 24th, 2011

Deadly Blessing - When Martha marries into a close knit sect she finds herself shunned as an outsider by its fanatical members, but when her husband dies mysteriously while riding a tractor expressly forbidden as a tool of the devil, things take a darker turn. Marked as a incubus by her neighbours, time is running out for Martha and her visiting friends, as plagued by nightmares and fearing for their lives, they face the violent fury and retribution of old time religion. DVD Release Date: November 14th, 2011

No Escape - When the available evidence in a murder case points to a young woman as the main suspect, her boyfriend, a police detective, arranges for a struggling songwriter who is playing piano in a bar to be blamed for the crime. The girl, knowing that neither she nor the piano player committed the murder, helps him to escape from the police dragnet and try to find the real killer. DVD Release Date: September 27th, 2011

The Mask of Diijon - Eric von Stroheim (Sunset Boulevard) stars in this mesmerizing, classic tale of horror. Von Stroheim plays a hypnotist who tries to have his hypnotized wife kill the man he suspects is her lover. In the dazzling finale, von Stroheim barricades himself in a magician's shop that may be more dangerous than the police outside trying to bring him out. DVD Release Date: July 27th, 1999

Key Witness - An inventor Milton Higby has a low-paying job in an office and a wife who constantly nags him. When she goes on vacation, he and his buddy from the office meat up with a pair of young ladies, one of whom ends up dead. Milton, afraid he will be framed for the murder, goes on a run disguised as a hobo, but only gets into more trouble. DVD Release Date: June 6th, 2011

Hickey and Boggs - Hickey & Boggs is a lament for the very thing it destroys: the heroic myth of the Private Detective. Those hardboiled ideals come crashing down the moment we meet our protagonists, down-on-their-luck partners Hickey (Bill Cosby) and Boggs (Robert Culp, also the film’s director). DVD Release Date: August 23rd, 2011

The Night Holds Terror - A tense film noir based on a true story, with Kelly as a middle-class family man returning to his desert home after a business trip into LA. Hitch-hikers hold the man and his family when they discover he has a wealthy father. Police uncover their plan and come to the rescue. DVD Release Date: October 4th, 2011

The Killer is Loose - A bank robber's (Wendell Corey) wife is shot during his arrest by a cop (Joseph Cotten). He escapes to kill the cop's wife (Rhonda Fleming) as retribution. Despite the cop's protest, the police decide to use Fleming as a lure. DVD Release Date: June 14th, 2011

The Boss - The Boss, filmed from a script by the blacklisted and hence uncredited Dalton Trumbo, starts in 1919 and ends somewhere in the Great Depression. It's about the corruption of a municipal machine that focuses on demobbed doughboy John Payne who, when his older brother dies, inherits his political clout. DVD Release Date: June 6th, 2011
