ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Plenty of Blu-rays to enjoy this week, but hard to pick at top selection. I loved Charley Varrick - an intrepid 70's crime drama with Walter Matthau - now on Blu-ray out of Germany from Koch Media. I was impressed with Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles from Cohen Films - a bracing documentary - one Welles' fans should consider. Criterion's Blu-ray of Louis Malle's My Dinner With Andre really advances over their older DVD looking very film-like with scrumptious textures. I was thrilled to see Powell and Pressburger's A Matter of Life and Death on Blu-ray advancing upon the previous SD transfers available if not reaching the heights we believe it could. I have always been keen on Malice a great cast in a twisted crime drama that encourages repeat viewing. Also touching a nostalgic bone is F/X - a wonderful 80's thriller. I also found joy in Shout! Factory's creature-feature pairings - both Empire of the Ants / Jaws of Satan and The Food of the Gods / Frogs - bad cinema with odd but charismatic appeal to those recalling them with childhood fondness. I grew to a new appreciation of Terry Jones erratically-paced Erik the Viking - notably the longer US theatrical version on Blu-ray from Olive Films. I've never embraced the Jesus Franco's surrealistic cinema of Jesus Franco, but I did enjoy (a little more) both Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed in Ecstasy now on Blu-ray from, Severin Films. On DVD Gregory covered more of his vintage-noir-ish-niche with the new The Whistler and The Power of the Whistler plus the intriguing East of the River and The Walls Came Tumbling Down as old cinema to get curl-up with one late Friday night. Eric reviewed My Mistress with Emmanuelle Béart as the titular dominatrix, although it may not live up to male-centric imaginations. "At last I recognize his mania. He believes me to be the mystical Caligari. Astonishing! But I think I know how to cure him now."

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles BD - Chuck Workman's documentary Magician: The Astounding Life and Work of Orson Welles surveys the influential career of the celebrated superstar by including clips from just about all of his movies. The filmmakers also reveal how he became one of the biggest stars in the world before the age of 25, battled his entire career to raise money to make movies the way he wanted to, and lived an outsized life until his death in 1985. Blu-ray Release Date: May 26th, 2015

Erik the Viking BD - Norse mythology meets Monty Python-esque humor in the Terry Jones written & directed comedy, Erik The Viking. Erik (Tim Robbins, The Player, The Shawshank Redemption), the Viking of the title, in an effort to petition the gods to save the planet for the impending Ragnarok — “the end of the world” — must travel to Asgard with a less-than-stellar crew at his side. The supporting players include Mickey Rooney, Eartha Kitt, John Cleese, Terry Jones and Charles McKeown. Blu-ray Release Date: May 26th, 2015

My Dinner With Andre BD - Bring two New York intellectuals together and they'll beat each other's ears off swapping stories about their psychoanalysts. Here Malle celebrates just such an encounter, recreated by the original participants: a sad, never-quite-made-it playwright (Shawn) and a brilliantly successful director (Gregory) who dropped out to 'find himself' in a quest ranging from Grotowski in Poland to Tibet, the Sahara and remoter Scotland. Just two people talking, shot mostly in close-up. Riveting, exhilarating stuff. Blu-ray Release Date: June 16th, 2015

F/X BD - A man who simulates death for a living finds himself unwittingly tied into the real thing in this New York-based suspense drama. Special-effects man Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown) makes his living simulating gory mayhem and photogenic violence for movies such as "I Dismember Mama." Tyler is given a chance to expand his professional horizons when he's approached by Lipton (Cliff De Young), who introduces himself as an FBI agent and makes an unusual proposal. Mob kingpin Nicholas DeFranco (Jerry Orbach) is willing to testify against his fellow gangsters, but the investigators are worried about his safety. Blu-ray Release Date: June 9th, 2015

Malice BD - Alec Baldwin stars in this thriller as Dr. Jed Hill, a brilliant young trauma specialist who begins to believe he can do no wrong after he saves the life of a patient given up for dead by another doctor. Jed runs into an old classmate, Andy Safian (Bill Pullman), who is now a college dean. Andy invites Jed to stay with him in the attic bedroom of a house he is renovating with his wife Tracy (Nicole Kidman). Tracy takes a dislike to Jed, whom she thinks is a psychotic egomaniac. In the mean time, Andy has to deal with a serial killer on the loose among the campus dorms. While Andy is helping belligerent law enforcement officials with the murder investigation and Jed is drinking straight shots at the local saloon, Tracy begins to have abdominal pains and is rushed to the emergency room. Jed comes directly from the bar and slices her open, removing more from her body cavity than he should. The allegations fly fast and furious between Tracy, Andy, and Jed. Blu-ray Release Date: June 16th, 2015

Charley Varrick BD - Marvellous, toughly eccentric thriller which confirmed that Siegel had more responses to '70s paranoia than a mere Magnum blast, and decisively removed Matthau from the wasteland of Neil Simon wit. Varrick, 'the last of the independents', unwittingly hits a Mafia payroll; staying alive means outwitting Molly (Baker), the Mafia's freak-killer hitman. The defensive odyssey is through sunlit noir territory, populated exclusively with cherishably individuated oddballs. Clever, but never cold. Blu-ray Release date: March 19th, 2015

She Killed in Ecstasy BD - Cult filmmaker Jesus Franco directed this erotic horror film using the pseudonym "Frank Hollmann." The plot concerns Dr. Johnson Fred Williams, who is driven to suicide after being exiled from the medical profession for his unorthodox experiments involving human embryos. Blaming the medical board, Johnson's distraught, psychotic widow Soledad Miranda hunts down the doctors one by one, murdering them by methods both sadistic and sexual. Blu-ray Release Date: May 22nd, 2015

A Matter of Life and Death BD - May 1945: Peter Carter (David Niven) is flying back to England from a bombing raid, but the crew are bailed-out with parachutes or dead and the damaged plane will imminently crash. With what he knows as his final voice he converses with June (Kim Hunter), a young American radio operator working for the RAF. Preferring a watery grave than the fireball of a crashing plane, Peter jumps into the English Channel (no parachutes left) leaving June with his final wishes and desire to meet her... one day. The universal tumblers have jammed and Peter not only survives but the first girl he meets on the beach is June. Their initial kiss supersedes life itself. Blu-ray Release Date: April 14th, 2015

Vampyros Lesbos BD - Director Jesus Franco's surrealistic reworking of Bram Stoker's short story "Dracula's Guest" has acquired a substantial cult following due to its hallucinatory erotic imagery and a sexy performance by Soledad Miranda as vampiric Princess Nadine Korody. Ewa Stroemberg stars as Linda Westinghouse, an American working in a Turkish legal firm. Lucy is plagued and thrilled by a series of erotic dreams concerning a mysterious vampire woman who seduces her before feeding on her blood. Blu-ray Release Date: May 22nd, 2015

Empire of the Ants / Jaws of Satan BD - Empire of the Ants has sleazy scam artist Joan Collins tries to sell phony real estate deals down in the Florida everglades. What she and her unsuspecting buyers don't know is the area has been taken over by giant ants! in Jaws of Satan A preacher whose ancestors were cursed by Druids battles Satan, who has taken the form of a huge snake. Blu-ray Release date: May 26th, 2015

The Food of the Gods / Frogs BD - In Food of the Gods, Morgan and his friends are on a hunting trip on a remote Canadian island when they are attacked by a swarm of giant wasps. in Frogs Jason Crockett hates nature, poisoning anything that crawls on his property. On the night of his birthday the frogs and other members of nature begin to pay Crockett back. Blu-ray Release date: May 26th, 2015

East of the River - As to the basic plot, that's been done again and again in endless variations. Warners even used it at least a half a dozen times. Boyhood best friends/brothers get into some sort of juvenile scrape. One goes "good," the other "bad." Both meet years later and thereby hangs the tale. However, when the boys are played by Garfield and popular 30's second-lead William Lundigan and the girl they both love by Brenda (Mrs. William Holden) Marshall, the good performances that result raise the story above the standard clichés. Almost as good, albeit with a lot of stock "Italian" mannerisms ("You a good-a boy!"), is Marjorie Rambeau as the boys' mother. DVD Release Date: June 10th, 2014

The Walls Came Tumbling Down - Several shady characters in pursuit of an elusive but fabulous treasure, ŕ la The Maltese Falcon, is an all but sure-fire formula for success (sure, sometimes it misfires: See The Argyle Secrets). The Walls Came Tumbling Down is no black bird, but neither is it an unpaired old sock. It's an entertainingly cheesy, semi-hard-boiled mystery with Humphrey Bogart's gumshoe replaced by ace reporter Lee Bowman, who apes the long-in-the-tooth, desperately debonair style of the first filmed Sam Spade, Ricardo Cortez. DVD Release Date: June 3rd, 2014

My Mistress - It s a long hot summer for sixteen-year-old Charlie Boyd. He just found out his mother is having an affair with his father's best friend, but is distracted from his problems by the mysterious woman down the street who has visitors day and night. After a sudden family tragedy Charlie is overwrought with pain. At first feeling hopeless, Charlie soon finds solace in Maggie, the beautiful French stranger, a dominatrix who teaches him the seductively beautiful side of pain, and how it can heal his emotional wounds. What starts as a perverse game quickly turns into a taboo love affair. And as Charlie learns to control his pain he turns that control back onto his mistress. DVD Release Date: 5 May 2015

The Whistler - This movie is the first installment of The Whistler series from Columbia Pictures, all but one of which starred Richard Dix whose A-picture career was then on an alcoholic downgrade, but whose liquor-ravaged face was just right for the overall atmosphere. (For a complete list of series titles, consult "movie connections" on web page.) Of all the movie series to emerge from the 30's and 40's, this is easily one of the most fascinating and unusual. Each entry presents a different self-contained story, tied together only by the mysterious figure of The Whistler who comments briefly on plot developments, but appears only in shadow to whistle his trademark refrain. He seems to be a figure of fate since the hand of destiny emerges in most of the entries. DVD Release Date: May 5th, 201

The Power of the Whistler - Far from the best of the series. The first twenty minutes or so are intriguing, after which the film trails off into a conventional suspenser. Dix plays a mysterious man who's suffered memory loss following an accident. Lovely Janis Carter steps in to assist after a prophetic portent from an ordinary deck of cards. Dix appears a decent sort eager to uncover his lost identity, but as events unfold the situation becomes darker, with an ending that would warm feminist hearts of decades later. Some nice touches that build ambiguity, such as the frilly apron as Dix prepares breakfast for the girls, or his saying grace before the chatty sisters can dig in. On the other hand, there are the mysterious deaths trailing behind. DVD Release Date: May 5, 2015
