(aka 'Bodily Harm')

Directed by Harold Becker
US 1993

Harold Becker (The Onion Field) directed this bold, riveting and deviously entertaining thriller starring Alec Baldwin (Glengarry Glen Ross), Nicole Kidman (Eyes Wide Shut) and Bill Pullman (Lost Highway). An easy-going college dean's quiet New England world has just been terribly disrupted, two coeds have been raped, a third has been killed, and the police are beginning to suspect him. At home, bills are piling up, his wife is developing severe stomach cramps and the new tenant - a devilishly handsome surgeon - is regularly entertaining nurses late into the night. Little does Andy know that all of these events are related... and that he's about to be blindsided by something more daring and deadly than anything he could have ever imagined! Boasting an excellent supporting cast that includes George C. Scott (The Day of the Dolphin), Anne Bancroft (The Graduate), Gwyneth Paltrow (Se7en), Bebe Neuwirth (TV's Cheers), Peter Gallagher (Late For Dinner), Josef Sommer (Witness) and Tobin Bell (In the Line of Fire), this spine-tingling thriller was beautifully shot by the great Gordon Willis (The Godfather Trilogy).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Lorber - Region 'A' - Blu-ray May 15': Firstly, this is one of those films I can continually re-visit. Very twisty thriller with great characters and performances. It has some noir buried beneath the narrative. Kidman is an evil femme fatale and Pullman the sap who is devoted, but awakens. This is one of Alec Baldwin's best roles, IMO. The Blu-ray is nothing surprising - it improves upon the SD's darkness and removes the lesser format's modest noise. Colors, especially the cooler flesh tones, improve to normalcy. Like the DVD it is bare-bones (only trailers on both) and the 1080P image improves in more layered contrast and a higher level of detail. It looks quite impressive in-motion. The disc is only single-layered (as is the SD) but a decent bitrate approaching 5X that of the 2000 MGM, flipper (Pan and scan on opposite side), DVD.

Kino Lorber improve upon the old standard Dolby audio with a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel at 1682 kbps. The effects gain prominence especially the score by the great Jerry Goldsmith (The Burbs, Seconds, Hoosiers, The Blue Max, Breakheart Pass) does another sneaky score and it sounds pristine in lossless. There is some perceived buoyancy but the music drifts from a serene sense in the idyllic college community to intense suspense depending on the scene mood. There are optional English subtitles on the region 'A'-locked Blu-ray disc.

Malice is just one of those films That I can't stop watching once I start. Baldwin does an amazing job as the egomaniac doctor, Kidman is diabolical but often looks drop-dead gorgeous and there is plenty of strong support with steady Pullman and wonderful bit parts by George C. Scott and, my favorite, Anne Bancroft. Personally, I know I will revisit this film, many times, in the future and the Blu-ray is a wide step beyond the SD in terms of a/v. Certainly recommended!
